Best finish for the enterprise
Posted by epaulk on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 1:21 PM

Hi everyone:

Which is you favorite finish for the enterprise? (most epecifically the B). More than brands, I'm wondering about shine. It's better: gloss, mate or Flat??

Thanks;

Edgar.

Well, I prefer a matte finish on everything, but the aztec style seems to be composed of a combination of matte and satin finishes. (That is to say flat and semi-gloss.)

Because of the 'scale effect', I find that gloss rarely looks right on a model. Even most operational metal-skinned aircraft can look too shiny if purely gloss coated (I have seen exceptions, tho...)

Good luck, whatever you choose -JC

Well, If you're talking about the refit model, I thought that the light sheen it had was nice on TMP. When it pulled out of Drydock you could see the reflections of the lights on the ship. To me, when I saw that on the Big Screen, I thought that added a lot of realism to the model. Gave it that metalic feel to it. Since they reused the shots of Drydock for the biginning of ST:TWOK there was no change in the model until they met up with Reliant. Then you can tell they dulled the finish but this was due to the reflectiveness of the bluescreening process. The first time I saw the movie I noticed the difference right away and that kinda bugged me. I felt the Enterprise looked more like just a model after that. So, to answer your question, I think a matte or semi-gloss finish looks best.

You'll have to go with CJ's recommendations..... How many awards have you won at WonderFest? A bunch I'm sure!

Gotta agree with Cosmic J on that one.

Especially if you're planning on doing the E-B.The aztek pattern (IMO) would be best

replicated with alternating flat/semi-gloss panelling.

Just take your time,and I'm certain you'll get the effect you're looking for. Make a Toast [#toast]
