First Klingon model..little help here!
Posted by Killjoy on Saturday, April 5, 2008 5:03 PM

I am assembling my first Star Trek model, a AMT Klingon Bird of Prey B'rel class scout ship.

As I am a fairly competant modeller, I am not concerned about assembly, but there is this gorgeous grey-greenish color that the hull is painted, and I could use a bit of assistance with finding this color.

I intend to paint it using an airbrush, and I primarily use Tamiya paints.  Does anyone have the ratio, or a mix that will get me this color?  I don't mind experimenting with several different mixes to get the right shade.

Thanks for ANY advice!

Chris

I built this one a while back.  I don't remember using any gray myself, and though I use Tamiya for a lot of projects now, I hadn't come across any yet when I was painting my B'rel and used MM enamels.  If you're interested and anyone knows ratios to mix Tamiya colors to match, here's what I used:

Green plating: varying pattern of FS Pale Green, Green Zinc Chromate and Willow Green

Orange "feather" details: Russian Marker Red

As I said, it was a looooong time ago and I hadn't messed with washes yet.  Sadly, the kit was lost between moves so I can't send pics.

Maybe it's time I replaced the old bird...

I have used both the Testors MM Zinc Chromate and Pale Green mixed with Testors Gloss Blue and Gloss White. I mixed the blue and the white like at 10% each of the blue and white to either the Zinc Chromate or Pale Green. The pale green after I used a wash of black and dry brushed white over it came out to faded but I couldn't correct it in time for the contest. The BOP was a resin kit that I got at Wonderfest for $10.

The one I did in Zince Chromate with the blue/white added to it came out looking closer to what I wanted. I only had a single picture of the BOP to use and it was a 3/4 shot from the front. This is from the Adversary 3 ship set.

Here is my last BOP models from the Adversary set, It was my 2007 Wonderfest entry along with a kitbashed X-wing-D-7.

I painted the BOPs almost straight Zince Chromate Green with some Beret Green and they were washed in black and weathered with Tamiyas weathering kits that you rub on and it last along time.
