Yup, also known as slide molds. Trumpeter maxed out on the muzzle break for thier 15cm Grille. 5 part molding, very cool.

I'll see about bringing the Model Graphix mag that has two stunning dios done with the Bandai to WF (yes, the Wonderfest), just ask somebody wearing a CoMMiES tee-shirt.

He means that parts were produced using 3-part steel molds rather than 2-part steel molds. Parts are injected into steel molds - and then the parts of the mold are pulled apart to release the parts...  This means that no part of the steel mold can have "undercuts", or else you'd never get the parts out.  So when they've got a part that can't be done in a 2-part mold because of that limitation, they may use a 3-part mold...

Bandai mostly uses that technique to make their kits simpler - creating single parts where before they might have created an assembly with a seam in it...

Ah, I got ya. Slide Molds. Dragon uses those alot too. I thought it might be a warning of something to watch out for... Sign - Oops [#oops]

I was just looking at the kit, and it appears the pilot's "cage" is done that way. Very snazzy.

Oh, and you asked if I could point out some good Votoms builds - the one that comes immediately to mind was our first contest winner at MMC - I don't have a proper link to his model but I can point you at the copy on MMC.  Builder goes by "Victorious Secret"

Victorious Secret - "Sgt. Zatora's Scopedog"

It's a customized build of the old Takara/Wave Scopedog kit...

Nice build. I hope mine looks that good.

Thanks, man.

Thanks man, I really appreciate all the notes.

I got the kit in the mail today. I could tell from your pictures that is was big, and I've built a bunch of the Ma.K.s in the same scale, but it's sheer size still suprised me.

This part of your notes confused me a bit:

As a note, you'll find all sorts of 3 piece molding on this kit. Gun barrels, shoulder armor, arm parts, etc.

Could you clarify that? I'm not sure what it means.

Thanks man, I really appreciate all the notes.

Hopefully I get it fixed up for WF.

I assume you mean WF USA? I literally live right down the road from the Executive, so I'm there every year. If we run into one another, I'll buy you a drink.

Thanks again - JC

You really don't have to do anything to it. I carved the cables off the lower arms and replaced them with fine wire, added a cable on the visor and a small antenna.

The mods to the cockpit were limited to the cabling on the chair sides and that was more because I could than I had to.

My biggest compaint is the molded texture on the shoulders which would have been fin had there mot been a big seam to sand down. As a note, you'll find all sorts of 3 piece molding on this kit. Gun barrels, shoulder armor, arm parts, etc. The hinges for the cockpit armor are fragile. Just handle cautiously and all will be ok. I broke mine but was able to glue things back together.

Which brings up plastics. There are, seemingly, three types of plastics used. Some soft flexible stuff, some normal, and some hard but brittle stuff. Since finishing the build I've broke a number of fine parts (like the finger ball joints) in transit. Hopefully I get it fixed up for WF.

You'll find that there is detail everywhere. Parts that would never see the light of day are detailed.

Oh, and on the metal spec one, read all the way through the instructions before starting. Some of the PE part placement is only shown.

Oh yeah, that's the stuff. Particularly the cockpit. Did you have to greeblify it much, or just as shown in the pictures?

Any snags to watch out for during construction or painting?

kylwel:

I've been meaning to u/l the images of mine to the web-site. I'll post a link here when I do (hopefully today).

It's a great kit. Huge amounts of detail. Lots of plates can be left off or opened up. The metal spec is a little, well, special. Some PE parts that don't add much, turned metal parts for the gun, and the metal pop bolts. Oh, and the machined zoom eye. It also comes with some nice lens' but I'm not sure if those come with the regular kit or not.

Oh heck yeah, I'd love to see yours. You do good work. I'd really appreciate it.

tetsujn:

Yeah, I too was drawn in by the Metal Spec sale at HLJ...  It was pretty odd, when the sale first started they didn't have the kit in stock - I guess one of HLJ's suppliers must have gotten sick of having too many overpriced Metal Specs sitting around...

Smile [:)] Yeah, I think you might be on to something. When I ordered mine, they were 'Low Stock', so I jumped at it w/o thinking too much. Now, it's just 'In Stock'...

Edit: D'oh! Now it's 'Low Stock' again...

I haven't seen any good Bandai Scopedog builds yet - though I've seen lots of great builds of the older Scopedog kits...

I think I saw one at WF years ago, but I'm not sure. Have you seen them in person, or online? Would you be willing to post a link?

'Scopedog' build-ups?
Posted by Cosmic J on Friday, May 9, 2008 12:41 PM

I was bumping around HLJ looking for a Gundam to build, when I came across Wave's ‘Scopedog Metal Spec‘ kit. Here's the link:

http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN949844

At that price, it's less expensive than the same kit without the metal parts, so I snatched one up (and a couple of those gasaraki ‘Raiden Armor ‘ kits). Cool [8D]

So while I was sitting around feeling all smug, it occurred to me that I have never seen a ‘Scopedog' buildup anywhere. Leastways, not that I can remember...

Has anyone ever seen one of these kits built up? Is anyone else familiar w/ this kit?
