PG Zaku II Char
Posted by smeagol the vile on Saturday, May 10, 2008 5:48 PM

I have gotten tired of looking at my snapped together pg char's zaku II, so I decided to paint it.  I decided to go a differnt then normal way of marking.  I decaled the Zaku up like the Sazabi.

I had a massive problem fixing the seam in the nose because of the visor, so it doesnt look great

I ask because it has a sort of salmon overtone in the pictures.

See, my Uncle used to be in the Air Force. He told me that AF testing had determined that the ideal camoflage color for aircraft was a pale Pink. Something to do w/ the way the human eye processes the color red at a distance. Pilots however, refused to fly pink planes.

He could have just been jerking my chain, or repeating an 'Urban myth' style meme common in military service (if you've ever served you know what I mean). I really don't know, but the idea intrigues me...

Even if he was messing w/ me, after he told me that I noticed that DAK panzers were a sort of pink, and early desert shermans were too. B-24 Liberator bombers were painted a color called 'Desert Pink', etc.

So I've been thinking about building up a mech of some sort, and painting it pink. I've painted just about every other kind of camo on 'em, I'd like to try something different. Not Hot Pink, more of a pale salmon color. I think it would take weathering well, but every time I tell people about my idea, they look at me like I have something they don't want to catch... Sigh [sigh]

Anyway, I was looking at your build up so far, and that red seemed interesting and different, so that's why I asked. I wasn't trying to be a smartass or thread-jack you; my apologies if I gave that impression.

Looking forward to more updates - JC

na, you didnt jack my thread or anything.  and it is simply a red, dullcoated, even though is does come accross has having a sort of salmon color, now you mention it.

And as far as the urban myth thing.  its my belief they we have no idea what our government has military wise, and we are only told of the 'new and improved' amazing tech and weapons, once they become obsolite, if you understand.  It might be that kind of thing, or it might be true.  Hell they would put yellow stripes and polkadots and stuff on Uboats to camo then, just something to distract the eye from knowing what it really is.

Anyhow, I should have new pics up soon, I got rid of the red spikes, there just pure silver.  I need to get some dullcoate though, I cant finish without it

Heh, I hear ya. I go through a can of Dullcote per model. Every time I go to Hobby Lobby I pick up whatever they have, just so I don't run out...

FINISHED!  I know that it has a few errors here or there, too thick paint in a spot or two, but it looks 100% better then it did when it was snapped.

that's one pretty nifty looking pg zaku.  i also like the color, even though char's zaku was actually pinkish but hey, the shield says neo zeon n by then this guy was painting everything bright red.

as far as the pink color camo goes, some british equipments in desert areas were indeed painted pink.  some good example would be the land rover sas 4x4 (tamiya released it as the pink panther) and those photo recon spitfires that got painted pink.

Well, the thing with pink.  This thing is WAY to big to mix my own paint for it.  And finding pink that isnt metalic, hot, pearl, or flourescent is hard to find.
