The way I learned how not so long ago was to test build it first.  I like this method because 1. I get to see what it looks like and take before and after shots to see if I really made it look better by painting.  2. I get to plan out how I'm going to paint it.  I wouldn't want to prime and paint everything only to find a big seam that should have been filled, because that whole process will destroy the paint.  So I get to make a list of the parts that need to be fixed before I prime everything.  And then I paint each part.  I haven't gone into doing camo or anything so I can paint each piece the correct color and it works when I fit it back together.  Those websites I gave you before can help here.  I love Fichtenfoo's How to Build MGs tutorial for showing the whole process.  And the Gamerabaenra(hope I spelled that right) has some airbrushing and seam filling videos that really helped me see that technique.  I do however wash everything while its still on the sprue.  Just be careful not to lose any little parts down the drain.  I almost had a heart attack when a little tiny piece from my GP 01 FB was missing from the sprue after washing, but it turned out that it had broken off in the bag.  And then it wasn't even used in the model GGRRRR.  Anyway, I hope that helps a bit.

If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.
