Replacement Canopy for Monogram Colonial Viper in 1/32 (approx) Scale
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Friday, July 4, 2008 1:18 PM
I'm building the old '70s Monogram Colonial Viper that I picked up at a garage sale but the canopy was missing.  It was a solid grey, one-piece canopy with black decals to represent the clear parts.  My question is does anyone have this kit (unbuilt or in the parts box) and could you vacuform or stretch-form a copy for me? I'd be willing & able to pay for the labor and postage.  Contact me via pm if you can help me out and we'll exchange particulars.

That same kit was recently re-popped and should be available at a hobby store near you.

It includes a clear canopy this time, and a simple cockpit w/ a Colonial pilot. It also has a nicer base (in my opinion) than the old school tripod. I prefer the old version of the engines tho'.

I just painted mine, so I can't vacuform a replacement for you (sorry), but I hope this info was at least a little helpful.

If you want to put out the expense, you can get a aftermarket cockpit set for your viper.  This should include a new canopy.

Thanks... I think I found the site you mentioned.  In case anyone else is interested, here's the link I found:

Viper cockpit w/vac-formed canopy, landing gear, seated and standing male and female Colonial Warriors with flight helmets, and Viper Launch Rail.

Hans, you'd be better off just getting the new Revell reissue with the clear cockpit and pilot.  Save you a lot of hassle messing around with vacforms.

That would be the logical thing, but I hate letting a kit beat me...  I've been giving it some thought, and I may be able to scratch-build the frame...

Actually, that's not a bad idea. It how the original was made after all. There are lots of references too.

I think I read somewhere that the original model's canopy was inaccurate, if that sort of thing matters to you. Just a heads up.

What I'm not sure of is where the canopy hinge-point is, nor the canopy dimensions.  My best SWAG is gonna have to suffice...  The other alternative is to buy the new release and vac-form a canopy from the new kit, perhaps the beginnings of a Galatica hangar bay dio...I do like sci-fi dios, since they offer so many opportunities for lighting effects and I enjoy doing that (a carry-over from my model RR days).

I broke down and followed your advice, Ghost.  Good news is that I think I can stretch-form a new canopy from acetate using the new Revell Viper kit's canopy as a master... Luckily, it's the same ol' Monogram kit revisted, with a few new parts thrown in..  Still, you'd think they would've made landing gear for it after all this time...

Well, I didn't have to stretch-form a canopy, I finally got a Mattel Vac-u-form and did it up on that..

I actually saw the canopy from one of the original series studio Vipers at a scifi convention, and it was an unbelievably thin and flimsy thing. Built to scale it wouldnt be very thick at all. Also, there were actually two different canopies used in the series-one for a two seater that was a little longer, although the differences are very subtle.  It was only in one shot, in a scene in which Apollo flies Adama down to the surface of a planet, and Lorne Green's head is seen behind the pilot's seat.

"no, honey, of course that's not another new model. I've had that one for a long time..."

Thanks very much for the link to the MMI site. Although my wallet is gonna take some serious flak! Make a Toast [#toast]
