silly not to build?
Posted by airtrans Crash on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 12:10 AM

I am just curious of your input,

I was given original models of R2-D2 and C3PO about 12 years ago. These are still in the original shrink-wrap and was told they were from when the original star-wars came out.

All through my youth I refrained from building them and still have not even de-shrink wrapped them... am I being silly in this or should I just build. I couldn't imagine they would be worth much monetarily.

what say you?

If those kits date back from 1977, to a collector, they could be worth more than you think. Especially still being shrink wrapped.

Yea, exactly.  That kind of thing is incredibly rare.

The question for you really is, "Do you WANT to build them?"

While Sci-Fi figures are not my personal genre of choice, if they were, I would probably have already built those models. My personal view is model kits are for building, not for collecting - except with the intent to build them some day. In the past, I have completed several models many people would consider "rare" or "collectible" and would (probably will) build more in the future.

I would bet they would be worth about $25-30 a piece on eBay. If you are really worried about ruining valuable collectable kits, but want to build them, search eBay and buy later reissues (often going for $10-15) and build those up instead.

IIRC, the main difference between the original Star Wars issues and the Return of the Jedi re-box (and subsequent reissues) was the box artwork and instruction sheet and the original R2-D2 kit used peel-n-stick stickers and subsequent reissues included traditional waterslide decals.

I'd say it's your call.  If it were me dealing with old kits like that, I'd check out the prices on ebay and such over a few months and see if what they go for is worth not building.  Of course, I have how many kits filling the shelves that I'm going to build "someday"?

well, I'm a collector at heart, my mom is a collector, my dad is a collector.  my granddad was a collector (granted it was socks, but none the less).  I would die before building that.  I have 2 gundam kits, the limited edition qubeleys, the red and white that I am not even opening, I had the blue but opened it, saddly, gona get a new one.

I have held onto them for so long just half out of being a collector and half out of not wanting to jack them up when building... plus I have been having a blast with my armor.

To me its silly not to build. Thats what they were made for. To build and enjoy doing it. Not for it to sit in a box and collecting dust.

i found one, unwrapped, with Empire markingson the box several years ago at a show.

The dealer told me they were running (without wrapper and smelling of mildew) in the 200 range. I gave him forty and he was happy to take it.  I got the kit home, opned the box, closed the box and sold it on Ebay.

The shrinkwrap, and the fact that it is from Ep IV '77 vintage makes them more worthwhile to have from a collectors standpoint.  As a kit.....ehh....you wont be much impressed by it.

I'm still waiting for a good astromech droid (bubbletop Rxxx series) to come out so I can make the black imperial version.  I saw a nice one at the Nats this weekend with lights installed, he put a ton of work into it.

Save the old ones and build up something newer.
