Tamiya 1/700 IJN I-58

The I-58 was a Type B3 scout submarine. Built in 1944 she started out carrying scout planes. Latter on she was converted into a mother ship for the Kaiten suicide torpedoes which meant giving up their 14cm guns in the process.

I-58 achieved the most notable success by sinking the unescorted heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis with a spread of six conventional torpedoes on 30 July 1945, with heavy loss of life.  I-58 was also the only member of this class to survive the war.

This is my first attempt of a model of this type. Most of the small parts had to be scratch-built because of knife and tweezer accidentsBlack Eye [B)]. I added PE ladders to the conning tower and and PE rails  to the deck. Again this was a first for me. The photos really bring out the flaws in the build but I still had fun building it.

As much as this model was a pain in the hind quarters at times I look forward to applying what I learned to the next one.

I hope you enjoy

At this point in time I have no clue how to build water so for now it will remain like this on my desk. Maybe someday I will revist the I-58 and place it in water.

I've got that one in my stash and yeah, it is a tiny little critter. My plan *cough* is to pair it with a Tamiya Indinapolis someday. Looks like yours turned out just fine!
