1/350 Nimitz
Posted by mullingarmurf on Thursday, August 28, 2008 3:25 PM

I was going to buy the Trumpeteer kit to make for my son in law who served on it in the late 90's.  The kit represents the Nimitz in 1975.  Does anyone know if there were major structural changes made in those 20 odd years?  If so are there after market kits available?

Thanks and have a good Labor day weekend.

Frank,

There were lots of changes over the years. Sponsons were added for more weapons and antenna mounts and the island went through additions.

I don't know of any aftermarket conversions, but I can suggest a few things.

Most importantly, do NOT use current photos of the ship as a reference for a 90s Nimitz. When the ship went through its refueling and complex overhaul in the late 90s, many changes were made. The mainmast, island, radar tower, etc., are very different today than when your son-in-law served.

I believe your best bet will be to use the Theodore Roosevelt, or the Abraham Lincoln, as your references for some simple scratch building. While antenna mountings, and other details will vary subtly, your model will be much closer to the Nimitz in your time frame using those ships.

Check the Navy News website at www.news.navy.mil for excellent downloadable photos.

hi i'm TANKERBUILDER and i do know the NIMITZ underwent changes at that time. Check with

SQUADRON SIGNAL or NAVAL INSTITUTE PRESS for what you need . KAGERO which has items listed with SQUADRON mail order may have something too . I hope this helps you as I don't have the pictures my daughter gave me while she was on board . GOOD LUCK oh , don't be put off , EDUARD and TOM'S MODELWORKS has excellent photo etched parts for the ship .

White ensign models makes an PE set which is nice on its own , but is required if you want to add the refit PE set which covers refits post 1975.

Hope this helps,
