Tamiya 1/72 Perkasa

Here's Tamiya's 1/72 Perkasa-class fast patrol boat, just off the slipway. It's a review build for One of FSM's competitors, so I can't say too much about it, but here's what I can.

Though a Tamiya kit, it dates from 1971, and is no shake&bake. There are sink marks in the hull beneath the fittings for the original motorization parts! However, it's a very complete kit, with pretty much all the detail you need and then some - fully-detailed wheelhouse interior, for example, which you'll never see again once installed.

I was particularly impressed by the fit of the superstructure parts. Though designed to be removable (so you can replace the batteries and service the engine) they just clip in place with no visible seam whatsoever. Against this, the decals were dire. Designed to be waterproof, they were extremely difficult to apply, and had very visible carrier film. Ordinary waterslide decals, sealed in with a coat of varnish, would have worked much better.

The model is pretty much OOB. The major additions were more to-scale rigging and other wires, and some deckhand figures from the Revell Germany 1/72 Kriegsmarine figures set. The officers and the ABs in white sweaters come with the kit.

The boat flies the Red Ensign because I'm modelling her as per her acceptance trials (saves weathering!) The torpedos are thus drill rounds, and hence the blue noses.

Enjoy! Comments and queries, as ever, welcome.

Cheers,

Chris.
