HNLMS Walrus

The Royal Netherlands Navy submarine Walrus is docking at Norfolk Naval Station today, I'm going down to the pier to check her out. We don't get a lot of diesel-electric boats around here and especially not a Dutch boat. This should be good, maybe I'll be able to weasel a beer off of the crew like I did when that French sub pulled in last year. The Peruvian and Chilean boats don't seem to carry any, and the Canadians don't like to share! (Probably afraid if they run out of good Canadian beer that they'll have to restock with American)

I did my little tour of Walrus. The forward section was just like you expect of a modern hunter-killer submarine, all electronic starwars stuff; the aft section was something out "Das Boot". Oily mist just hanging in the air, hot and cramped. Simply terrific. The Walrus has that unique X configured sternplane arrangement, too. The crew is very friendly and proud to show off their sub, Great experience but no beer....
