That guy made a very impressive build Jake! Hope I can do half as good on mine. That build does kind of confuse me more now. The fore and aft deck color on his shows a kind of black color. Maybe I just need to take a best guess!

the fore and aft decks are linoleum, not wood. the only wood decks are the lower mid deck and the for semi-circular platfoems around the upper 4.1" guns. i have 2 of these, a GMM pe set and a vectorcut laser-cut wood deck. i am at the point, when i get back to her, to cut the backs off the six 4.1" upper guns and adding plastic cylinders to represent the breechs. also have eight WEM 5"/51 in 1/350 for arizona. i may use those and build gun shields if they are close to the correct size.

On your original question on the yellow color I found that Floquil has Spanish Yellow which is very close to the oxyidized yellow you might be looking for?  Take a look see.

As I recall, most of the decks on this model are representing wood (look for the molded-in planking) and these should be painted in something approaching wood.  Everything else should be painted the same as your upper hull color (Imperial German light gray).  A good trick is to paint it first with tan, or sand, any sort of very light tan, and then after it dries, takes some very dark brown, or even flat black, thin it down a lot, and then using a fairly large brush, paint this 'wash' over the decks.  It will sink into all the planking 'seams' and make it look a lot more realistic.  As for the stacks and upperworks, if you want to do the ship 'pre-war' then these should be a buff-yellow.  Once the war started, these were all painted over in standard Imperial German light gray.....

SMS Emden color questions
Posted by ogrejohn on Monday, November 10, 2008 6:39 PM
I'm building the 1/350 Revell SMS Emden as a first time ship model and need some help about the colors. Is there a premixed color available for the yellowish upper works for the prewar scheme or is this something I'm going to have to try to mix myself? Also, what is the color for the main decks? I think the center portion is supposed to be a wood color but I'm not sure about the fore and aft portions. All help would be appreciated for this first time ship modeler! Thanks!
