"The Pioneer Steamship Savannah"

I have always enjoyed that paper- very sound historical research. Considring the modern historian/modeller/architect would have to rely on supposition for a picture of the 'real' Savannah,  the author's detailed knowledge of what was happening in US shipyards at that date certainly removes a lot of doubt. Indeed, I would wager a fair bit that someone who saw the real ship would recognise her from those drawings.

Anyway= anyone interested in this period would enjoy reading 'The Advent of Steam' by Basil Grenhill, part of the Conway History of the Ship series.

Anyone got good ideas of a plastic ship kit one could use for an approximate conversion? Revell's HMS Beagle, even the Academy 'New Bedford Whaler' present themselves as candidates- both are about the same in dimensions!

Oh, and on a personal level- You Yankees may have done it first, but don't forget it was Brunel's Great Western that was the first purpose-built Steamer to cross the Atlantic in revenue service!!!! [random provocative statement over]

I was in Savannah Georgia earlier thi year and they have a pretty good display at the Ships of the Sea museum dedicated to the savannah. the websites not that great though.
