Ever hear this?

Has anyone ever hear the story about a picket destroyer with the following painted on its main deck in large white Japanese characters, during an invasion of one of the Pacific islands?

"Insignificant destroyer, press on for glorious aircraft carrier."

Did this ever happen, or is it just an amusing yarn? Whistling [:-^] Either way, it would be a fun model to build.

No, but the idea is mucho funny. Sounds like something the USN boys would do to relieve tension - if they included bearing and distance it would be aiding the enemy - but still funny!!!!
One of the rules of combat " Try to look unimportant! The enemy may be short of ammunition."
My Favorite: " Never share a foxhole ( or a cockpit ) with anyone braver than yourself. "

There is a story that during the invasion of Okinawa one of the picket destroyers painted a large arrow with the words "Carriers this way" to try and avoid the kamikaze attacks that were brutalizing the pickets.

Funny, sounds like something a few of our squids in PACFLT would come up with.
