Pibber Colors?
Posted by rockythegoat on Friday, November 28, 2008 8:43 PM

Question on the colors of USN Pibbers (PBR).  Did they come in any other color then OD Green at anytime?  I have one to build and want to do it different.

Then again, would make a nice "what if" USCG Harbor Protection boat in white with the orange racing stripe!  Evil [}:)]

OD above the waterline, black below the waterline. I served on LSSC (by DML) and the sister MSSC of which there are many photos but no models although easliy built from photos.

Go to www.warboats.org for references and having served in 'Nam with the Boat Support Units I can assure you that whatever Vietnam era equipment, weapons and such were found on all boats, we operated in blue Levis and green t-shirts, wearing helmets and flak vests only in gunfights with Charlie.

Have a blast, from an old Gunner's Mate Chief! and if you have any more questions shoot them my way, the Brown Water Navy was my world!

Thank you to you johncpo and all of the other PBR guys who have take the time to answer my questions.  (Several responses over on the Armor page)  I also got some direct emails from some former members of the PBR units.

For those interested, in a nutshell, all PBRs were green up to when they were disposed of.  The majority appear to have had red bottoms, however, a large chunk had black bottoms.

Also, the term "Pibber" may have been an invention of Tamiya, as a couple of the guy said they had never heard them called that.

Thank you to all who took the time to reply.  Good group of guys!

 Rockythegoat,

Always a pleasure to help out fellow modelers. At one time I had a PBR in my collection and you are right "Pibber" is not a term that I ever heard from any brown water sailor!

Thanks for posting the info you gathered, I have that in my stash (Tamiya version), hope to build it soon. There is a Squadron/Signal publication on riverine warfare, I have a copy somewhere, let me know if you need or want any info from there, cheers!   PS Publish WIPs!
