What scale for submarines?

Ok,

Revell Germany do Gato, VIIC, VIIC/41 in 1/72. Those 3 together make a mean display!

I'm hoping for a 1/35 VIIC to be anonounced!

There is also a Type II U-boat in 1/72 by Special Hobby that has received good reviews, and of course Lindberg is supposed to release a couple Japanese subs in 1/72 this month tooo...... I have always liked the old S-boats too, and hope someone will release one in something larger than 1/350 someday....

Perhaps you should consider going down in scale to 1:400.   

All of the German subs you seek are available from Mirage in that scale.   I see where Tauro has just released a Fleet Snorkel version of a Balao in 1:400.  It wouldn't take much to scratchbuild a backdated conning tower to make a Fleet Sub.   Dolphin also makes some nice WWII Italian subs in that scale.

That leaves you short the S-boat.   That is a scratchbuildable subject with a set of drawings.

Might want to consider 1/144th also although you won't find an S boat. Trumpeter has Gato in both 1941 and 1944 versions and Revell of Germany offers U-Boots in Type VIIc and Type VIId (the minelayer version) and a Type XXI. I kind of like the scale since the models are still pretty good sized and offer a decent amount of detail. There's also some PE available too. No Japanese, Brit. etc. yet....Rick Martin

The Vacuform kit company 'Combat Models' has made an S-Boat kit in 1/72. I keep hoping it will reappear somewhere else sometime.

I would second a vote for the Mirage series; also very affordable, many mirage kits usually part of Squadron's monthly sales

 Hi Guys!

Between work,school,and everything else that gets in the way of my modelling,I've been woking on the COMBAT MODELS "S-Class" for the past several months.

It was Mario Grima's build that inspired me.The "S-boat" requires a tremendous amount of scratch building and raiding after-market detail sets.In my opinion,it's not impossible,just difficult to work with.And EXPENSIVE to build (details,putty,AVES-SCULPT,sheet plastic,etc...).Research material is a must!

It can be done.It just takes a lot of time,effort,and resources.

As for those Mirage U-Boats, Eduard makes an excellent PE set for them. They build into excellent display pieces.
