Do you know what version of the kit you have?  If it is the latter version (after 1995) many improvemtns have been made to the kit, details added and mistakes corrected.  I was honored to be picked to work with Minicraft to help make those corrections.  I consider it one of the High Points in my modeling Hobby/Business.

How do I tell when the kit is from?  Is there a date marking somewhere I should look for?

If you look in the instruction manual you should see a date, new mold correct kits hit the market after 1995. Also, the newer versions will have a 1-2 page intro explaining the upgrades and better research.  My name as well as 4-5 others who worked with Minicraft in making the model mold corrections as well as telling them where the major mistakes were.  Minicraft really went out of their way to improve the kit, the newer kits are well worth the $70.00.  The only thing that they should have done is improve the stand.  Most modelers who want a nice base will make their anyway, so I suppose it's a moot point.
