there's been a long rumored Type VIID Uboat that was a mine layer. There's also a conversion kit to build one out of the the Type VII. The one I'd like to add to my stash is the conversion kit that had a different sail along with a flak 38 and a couple other AA guns. There's getting to be quite a following in the 1/72 scale naval stuff.

actually the boat with the flak 38 wasn't all that common, and the one you have was the more common one. I have both kits, and the one with the flak 38 seems to be much more elaborate. Even the decales are much nicer. Wonder if anybody sells the mine laying stuff for one? From what I've read the S-Boats did lay a lot of mines during the war.

two things to bring to light about the Sboat kits (as I've been told). The props are not right, but W.E. is supposed to sell white metal replacements that are right. Also there is a company (name escapes me) that is supposed to sell masks for the camo patterns used on them as well as the 1/72 subs too. Some of the S-boats had really elaborate camo patterns. I saw a really good book on them at Borders the otherday, but didn't have the money with me to buy it ($37). So I'll wait till they give me another 30% cupon, and snag it. Might want to check out the Michigan Minitures website. These guys have tons of figures from all the major brands.

I didn't know it also came with a rubber dingy. I also noticed Czech Master (Squadron catalog) also makes a series of dock sections that one could use to show several of these boats docked to. One could make quite the little diorama but would also take up quite a bit of room to do it right. I ordered Schnell boats In Action off of Amazon after reading several on line reviews of this booklet. What kind of camo's came on these boats? Where they all different shades of grey or were any of them done in any type of winter camoflague? I don't know much about these boats as I primarily deal with bigger subjects such as battleships of various nations or sailing ships. I got interested in the S boats after reading some of the builds going on with the Italeri 1/35 one (just too big for me) and then I first stumbled upon an early S boat made by Airfix and then the Revells. Let us know what you think of the Revell kit if you get a chance. Mine should arrive sometime this week also.

The kit # is 05002 for the boat with the flak 36 and flak 38. The Eduard PE # is 53 033. I got the PE from AAA Hobbies off Ebay (he has a store is is pretty good to work with). I see this kit very often on Ebay, and think it still in production (I hope so as I now want another one). There's also a 1/35th scale S boat, but it retails for about $219! (over 39" long). Doing a little research on these boats; I found several different paint schemes and many camo patterns.

    While on the 1/72 scale subject, I can also recommend the Revel submarines. They're not perfect, but the inaccuracies are known and fairly easy to fix in most cases. There seems to be more and more parts comming out for them all the time, but as I said before you can really invest a good bit of money in one if you want to bad enough. I need one more piece to fish out my Uboat, and that's the W.E. 88mm gun kit (well actually three more kits). I like the Andreas figure sets, but they don't come cheap when your looking at two or three sets (they run about $25 a set and the gun is somewhere around $30). The Gato Class sub can be even more expensive, so I've found out! I look to have about $400 in mine when it's done.

    Right now I think that if I had to just stay with one format of modeling; this is where I'd be. But right behind it is the WWI aircraft.

Czech Master Kits makes several 1/72 sets of S boat crews in resin. They also sell a set of mines in 1/72 scale. The Squadron shop shows these items in stock. WEM sells a complete photo etched set for the Revell kit along with replacement torpedoes. Both of these can be ordered from Brandon at Free Time Hobbies. I just ordered the Revell S boat with the flak gun along with these sets from them. I can't wait until I get them. I'm also planning on ordering the mines and maybe some of the crew figures as money permits. I hope this helps.

Eduard sells a couple photo etch kits for Schnelboots. One is for the one with the 37mm flak gun and the other without it. Otherwise they look pretty much the same. Not sure about a barrel for the 37mm as I've never looked for one. White Ensign sell things for them if I remember right. There is a decale company out there (maybe more) that sells flags and other detail stuff. I have both Revel kits in my stash that I've slowly been gathering detail parts for when I have extra money. I spent most of my boat money on Uboat stuff, and I'mstill not all the way there yet (about $350 so far), and have a Gato setting back to start. I'm kinda hopeing Revel does a release of the old Flower Class Corvette in the future.
