The article in FSM deals wih painting the unique Ms12 Mod camouflage pattern on the USS Fahfrenholt. Ron Smith used Silly Putty to mask the stringy camo pattern.
The 1:350 Tamiya Fletcher kit includes a full scale pattern for the Fletcher's Ms12 Mod camouflage. I shot it down to 1:700 scale to use as a pattern for a 1:700 Fletcher I did. The Dragon Buchanan also includes a camouflage pattern which could be used.
The Ms3x dazzle patterns can be painted with either paper masks or by using prepared commercial masks from Gator Masks. There are some camouflage design sheets at the shipcamouflage.com website http://www.shipcamouflage.com/camouflage_database.htm
Camouflage design sheets are also available from the Floating Drydock or in several books on the subject.
Print them out and take them to your local Xerox machine and rescale them to the appropriate size. Make several copies to use as the mask. Paint the hull the lightest color. Make a mask from the camo design sheet, either by transferring the pattern to some masking tape or cut the pattern out and attach it to the hull using a water solable glue such as a Uhu glue stick.
Burnish the mask down well and paint the next darker color. When dry apply a mask to cover that using the same method as before. Burnish the mask and paint the darkest color.
Strip the masks and touch-up any areas which need attention.
