It's been a month since I posted the last update and that is mainly because I have been waiting for someone to produce a set of sea mines to fit on the stern racks. At the moment I am considering using Schattons DC's instead. Build is progressing nicely and it has been a very smooth ride up to this moment. It is still mostly an OOB build. For the purists I suggest heading over to model shipwrights and check out the builds by Arjan Wiskerke and Macdurd. These two gents are light years away building genuine museum replica's of the Haju. Okido, screenies:

The 37mm isn't finished yet (colour barrel weathering etc. still to come)

Hi Julian,

I have been following your build with great interest as I have had the S-100 on order since last November and it was only been released in Australia last month.

I have now taken delivery of mine and being forwarned about the packaging problems I had an inspection first.

I have to agree that the packageing for such a large model is inadequate but I escaped without too much damage........ that being a piece broken off the bow which I easily repaired. Italeri should pack this model with styrene as the wooden model makers do.

Now having been inspired by your efforts with great photos to help I will get to it.

Hi Jester, yes, have bought some very thin lead foil which I will try to make look like canvas dodgers. I just loved that little compass, reminds of my time at sea, so I couldn't resist leaving the cover open. I see that you are back at work on your S-100 which is also looking very sharp (making me wonder whether to add some dark grey to the tube tops). I am happier with the chipping on my gunshield, seems less overpowering (got some expert advice from the Doog, over on the armour forum. The man is really magic).

Just another update on my progress with the S-100. Couldn't resist fitting the twin 20mm with the Schatton barrels. The 20mm is a kit in itself, beautifully detailed. Hoping that either Cammet or Robert Schatton get their mines out quick because I am now approaching the stern of the ship and those rails look awfully empty....:

Just a short update. Finished oil-dotting the hull underwater. Sprayed the hull with Vallejo matt varnish. Now the fun stuff starts as the deck etc. is built up:

Have been working on the wheelhouse of the boat. Have added wireing to the torpedo aiming device and have added rivets (using Trumpeters riveter device). I also added paint chipping to the helmet racks and the rear bulkhead of the wheelhouse (needs some cleaning up I can now see. Photo's show up all the ugly bits in full and gory detail )

Thanks Jester, I have had a couple of discussions on painting or not painting the duckboards. I remember from my time at sea that one of the best ways to make sure you slip is to paint the duckboards, duckboards generally being fitted to stop you slipping . The only time you painted them was if they were in a locker or rope store (somewhere dry). I have decided to leave them "au naturel".

My 1/35th scale bicycles have arrived Why bicycles ? It has become a part of Dutch lore that the Germans, in '40 - '45, "borrowed" an awful lot of bicycles from the Dutch and to this day have not returned them I couldn't stand building an S-boat that was stationed near Den Haag without putting a borrowed bike somewhere on deck for the crew to use when in port (important things like heading off to the local pub). Funny thing was that the only store that had the Tamiya bikes in stock was in,(wait for it), Germany. Go figure....................Have also got some rather bashed up oildrums and buckets ready to stow on deck somewhere.

I have fitted the tubes with airbottles and controls and am now working on the torpedo rails. The duckboards are going to be left natural wood and still need some work.

I am going to use sheets of 0.05mm metal foil to make the dodgers, this is really beautiful stuff only drawback being that it is black to start off with.Thanks for looking at my efforts to build a boat

Coming along beautifully Julian! Great work on the hatch covers!

Just a few progress snaps of the build. Sprayed the tube covering plates schnellboot weiss instead of the dark grey. First layer of oil weathering added to main and fore decks. Tube inspection plates being scratch built:
