That is the fuel filler cap.  There is one on each side of the hull.

Hi there Jim, I have the impression that the cranks are more to the inside of the boat but I am not ruling your idea out. Very well possible that it is a maintenance hatch for the gears.

cheers mate,

It could be an inspection hatch. Page 51, in Warship Pictoral 15, Kriegsmarine Schnellboote, shows schnellbootes during construction. There is a pic of a standard bridge S-boat with a partially completed raised foredeck which shows the gearboxes and shafts for raising and lowering the torpedo tube covers. These appear to be in the same approximate location as the the objects in question on the later armored bridge boats. The "hatches'" would likely be required for servicing the gearboxes and shafts.

Second thought, it is right over the torpedo tube, must be inspection hatch?

Looks like it is a bit forward of the forward fuel cells and right above the captains quarters. maybe a filler cap for the forward cells?

Whatever it is, Eduard has included it in their set for the Revell version.

Can anyone shed some light on what this is:

Looks like a filler cap or inspection opening. Seems to be on Port- and Starboard side. Whatever it is, it is isn't OOB with the Italeri kit.

Cheers,
