3 new modeling research books.
Posted by crackers on Saturday, February 7, 2009 2:11 AM

The Naval Institute Press, which publishes books of marine and military interests, has released 3 new books to aid modelers. They are:

        (1) Ship Models from Kits; Basic and Advanced Techniques for Small Scales, by  David Griffith, IBSN 978-1-84832-024-6   Designed for modelers who wish to acheve the best results in the ship kits in the 1:700 to 1:350 range of scales in plastic and resin. Covers basic construction, fittings, detailing, painting, finishing and display. 128 pages, 200 colored photos. Hardcover.   Price +s&h:   $47.95

         (2) Building a Minature Navy Board Model, by Phillip Reed, IBSN 978-159114-092-4  Step-by-step construction of a 1/192 model of the British, Royal George, of 1715. Taking the modeler through every building stages of framing and planking with decorative carvings, for an authentic looking Navy Board model with the aid of 400 photographs. 140 pages, 400 colored photos, Hardcover.   Price +s&h: $54.95

          (3) Period Ship Modeling, by Phillip Reed, IBSN 978-1-59114-675-9  Step-by step instruction of how to construct a 1/16 scale model of the American topsail schooner privateer of 1813, Prince de Neufchatel. 128 pages, 200 color photos.  Price +s&h: $47.95

Having one of Phillip Reed's books, Modeling Sailing Man-of-war, Majestic, I can vouch that this author makes modeling easier just by following his photo step-by-step approach to modeling, without even reading the texts. With his clear illustrations of every vital stage of construction, the novice and expert can make an impressive model from the age of sail.

The book by Griffith (#1 above) will not be available until July, according to the USNI Press Spring catalog.

...and the new one from Mr. Reed (the one on the small-scale "Navy Board" model is to be released May 1 (according to Barnes and Noble - which is where I usually shop for books, in order to get a "membership discount").

Our model club bought a copy of the other one by Mr. Reed (the one on modeling the Prince de Neufchatel for the club library.  It's an absolutely first-rate work - like the earlier one Crackers mentioned (which, by the way, is hard to find these days; used copies are pretty expensive).  The newest one looks like the best yet; the jacket photo alone is enough to make one start drooling.  Like many, many other sailing ship model enthusiasts, I've had ambitions of tackling a Navy Board-style model for many years.  Realistically speaking, I don't think it's going to happen before I retire - but that's not so far off.  If my eyesight just holds up, maybe....

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
