I may be 'jumping the gun, but has anyone heard anything further on the release of this kit by Trumpeter?

Nah, nothing yet - I'd expect a 2010 release at the earliest.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to Repulse this coming May.

You're probably right, given the history of the 1/350 HMS Repulse (I pre-ordered that LAST February!)

Based on prior performance, even though Trumpeter announces a product is on their to-do list the do not announce the release date and MSRP for their products until about 90 days before the fact.

dang I didn't even know Lindbergh was releasing a 1/200 scale Graf Zepplin aircraft carrier. Thats the biggest Aircraft carrier model to date!

Yeah, that has been posted for a while, but so has the HMS Repulse (I pre-ordered mine in Feb 2008 when it was 'announced' that it would be available last Summer!)

Well, I seem to recall a 1/200 Shinano by Nichimo that has been around for many years.... I have seen some reviews of the Lindberg Graf Zeppelin, along with some photos, and it really appears to be a very bad kit with a lousy attempt at details (really laughable in this day and age!).  Here's one photo...

well this thing looks a little better than the 1/720 scale Graf Zepplin hopefully they did the catapult better than ROG did?

The casement guns could be done better but the 10.5cm 3.7cm and 20mm AA weapons actually are way better than the 1/720 scale versions from ROG. And the aircraft look like they may have been molded from clear plastic and are also look better detail wise. It looks like the deck actually has wood detail which is nice and the catapults you can say look pretty good too.

You mean to tell me you don't notice the secondary guns in their twin mountings pointing in different directions?? The wood deck looks terrible too!  Really, you should get a hold of a Revell 1/350 Bismarck to get an idea of how bad the Lindberg Graf appears to be (and when you think that it is in 1/200 scale, 56" long, there really is no excuse for this!)..... Then again, if this sort of molding is OK for you, then have at it!  Lindberg could use the money.....

Don't get me wrong, I would really like to see a revival of the 1/200 scale.  Nichimo had a line in 1/200, which included the usual Yamato and Musashi, plus Shinano, and several destroyers (Akizuki, Hatsuzuki, and Kagero, as I recall), but no-one else followed suit.  You can still get these if you scrounge around a bit, and they make up into very good models for their day (late '70's?).  Perhaps (if the world economy ever recovers!), some of the other model manyfacturers might consider 1/200 again, especially if the 1/350 class gets flooded, but at least for the capital ships, you really can only have one of these as they are just so large, there is no place to put more than one!  On that basis, it had better be a good one!

Only 1/200 scale Capital ship I have is the Trumpeter Sovremenny destroyer. Though looking at the pics of the Graf Zeppelin you have to admit some of those problems with the kit appear to be builder error. A good modeler could probably make it 5 time better than the guy Lindberg got to build it. But hopefully once this gets released maybe someone will put out some aftermarket parts for it and any other possible 1/200 scale DKM kits.

It would be nice to see a 1/200 Bismark and Prinz Eugen.

Well, I would like to think that Lindberg would have obtoained a fairly professional model-builder to make this for the hobby show, but perhaps not.  I certainly would welcome some new 1/200 scale models, but I think it will be a few years before that is likely to happen because of the economy.  I will be happy just to see some of the already planned 1/350 scale kits actually hit the streets!

Regarding 1/200 scale, i think this would be particularly good for the smaller ships, such as destroyers and destroyer escorts, as well as cruisers..... But battleships, etc, that is a tough act to follow (though I have heard rumors of a 1/200 Arizona due out one day!)

Actually the 1/200 scale Arizona was announced at Neuremburg this year but I think it's just the resized 1/350 scale Arizona. But if you saw the price for the Zeppelin it is actually around the price of a 1/350 scale Trumpeter Aircraft Carrier but cheaper than the Hasegawa Akagi.

Made an error . It's actually the current version of the illustrious that airfix has announced, not the ww2 carrier.

Yes the Zeppelin is priced 'relatively' cheaply, but when you look at what you get, I think that answers the question.  I'm going to be keeping my eyes open on ebay for one of those Hasegawa Akagis, as some somebody in the near future is going to want to sell it off cheap.  As for the Graf, I really have no interest in it, as it is not in a scale conducive to much else, it is apparently fairly inaccurate and badly molded, and is a very strange subject in and of itself, except in a 'what if' mode...... I'd have rather seen a Lexington battlecruiser!

Of course the Zeppelin was a what if but it also existed. Now if Hitler had put more money into the KriegsMarine instead of those fancy and expensive terror weapons at the midpoint of the war you could have seen some amazing things. But as it was the KriegsMarine was the ugly redheaded stepchild of the German Military and the majority of the military budget went into the Luftwaffa and the various army units.

Yeah, you could 'what if' this stuff to death, but to what point?  My advice is if you think this would be a splendid kit for you, then buy it!  At the end of the day, it is what makes YOU happy that is the important thing in this hobby!

Now if only they released it in 1/100 scale then I could find that an excuse to buy 1/100 ME-109's and Stuka's.Tongue [:P]

I haven,t heard anything about it from the l.h.s. I buy from here in texas .  The GRAF might be ok but who knows . I do believe that like the REPULSE it may stutter it,s way to us MAYBE!! I bought a vessel not to long ago from a flea market . It was a polish cruiser . From poland . Gee whiz ,I,ve never seen so many parts for one ship . The fact is they gave parts for the sister ships and for different refits too . The kit is one of the finest molded products I,ve ever gotten my paws on !!!! tankerbuilder

I wonder how the new 1/350 plastics compare to the 1/400 Heller. Yes, should be improved but the price is double or triple. Wonder if it is worth the difference?

Heller's versions are lumpy and rather crude in comparison.

Another in box review of the kit here -

http://modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=4524

And here -

As for the prices? - Yes the importer/distributors are having a laugh at us.
