1/720th scale air wing
Posted by smith248 on Friday, March 6, 2009 2:37 PM

i'm looking for a set of aircraft to put onboard my 1/720th scale model of the USS Ronald Reagan.  I have found several sets of model navy aircraft in 700th scale but not 720th.  Can anyone help offer a place to look?

Thanks

I wonder if you might not want to buy a set and see how they look. Not next to the kit's, but a Tomcat at 1/700 is 1.195" and at 1/720 is 1.165" for a net diff of 0.03".

You do realize that the F-14 was retired before the Regan entered the fleet. So he would have to get hold of some 1/700 scale F-18E' and F-18F's 1/700 SH-60's 1/700 E-2's and 1/700 S-3's.

This I did not know. The kit comes with Tomcats, looking at the online sprue shots, but I now see that there is a separate sprue to make the CVN-76, which has F-18s. Thanks for the info.

It's worth a try.

Edit- According to wiki, the Reagan was commissioned on July 12, 2003 and sailed on her maiden voyage in early 2006. The F-14 was retired on September 22, 2006. HAH!Big Smile [:D]But I concede the point, lightheartedly, that F-14s didn't fly off of her.

All the S-3's are gone now.  The EA-6B's are still aboard until sometime in 2010 when the F/A-18G Growler starts to reach the fleet.

The Dept. of the Navy IMHO screwed the pooch getting rid of the S-3 they already retired the P-3 so the only dedicated ASW platform is the SH-60 which is also needed for the SAR role during carrier ops. And there is also scuttlebutt that the E-2 is also slated for retirement.

BTW the sprues with the F-14's are the same spues in that same company's entire 1/720 scale carrier series. BTW do these F-18 that come with the CVN-76 look like F-18E's? It would be nice if there were some 1/700 F-18F's.

Getting back to the question of scale - having built 1/700 airplanes for a 1/720 carrier (the Big E as she appeared in 2007), I can honestly say at that size you can't tell any difference. Unless you use a micrometer. The planes look right - and that's the main thing that counts.

As far as the actual kits go, look for the Fujimi Sea Way Model set No. 36, that gets you 12 F/A-18C Hornets, 4 SH-60 helicopters and 7 F-14 Tomcats, molded in clear plastic. You also get a couple of deck tractors;

You can get F/A-18C Hornets, F/A-18E or F Super Hornets, E-2C Hawkeyes, C-2 Greyhounds, EA-6B Prowlers, and SH-60F / HH-60H helicopters from Trumpeter, all molded in clear plastic and 8 to a box.

If you want to give your Hawkeyes the new 8-bladed props, my solution was to get 2 sets of White Ensign Model's fixed wing aircraft parts PE-715 and glue two sets of four-bladed props on each engine. I also used White Ensign PE-7062 to get more SH-60 rotors. They have modern aircraft and helos as well but with the current lousy exchange rate that option is rather pricy. Everything turned out OK for me, here's a shot of the final result:

You also forgot Skywave/PitRoad's 1/700 scale modern carrier aircraft set also done in clear plastic and the Trumpeter 1/700 scale modern aircraft come 12 to the box 2 per sprue with 6 sprues in the box.
