Any New Info On Any WWI 1/350 (or larger) Warships
Posted by mic53mlb on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 6:24 AM
I've posted before about this subject but it's been quite awhile. I just wondering if there has been any new news about either resin or plastic kits in 1/350 (or larger)of any WWI warships specifically British. I am aware of Iron Shipwrights' (Commander Models) 1/350 resin kits of HMS Queen Mary and Dreadnought but I was looking to hear something new possibly a QE class or something. I really liked FSM's article on the Koenig in April's issue just wish it was a little more indepth but it was neat. Any info would be helpful.

There are new kits coming, but just not completely ready for release.  Maybe the 1st of April...

Anything which Jon says on the first of April, take with an appropriately-sized grain of salt!

Hey, just kiddin' Jon!

Yeah, I thought about that.  I'm just waiting on etch for one and barrels for the other, and the time frame just happens to be April 1st...

not 350, but Master Box is planning on the release of a whole of Jutland combatants in 700 scale

http://www.modelshipwrights.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=4990

Master Box Ltd the Ukraine company who has been taking the world by storm with their range of military figure and vehicle sets are now entering the naval area with new products.

Master Box Ltd have also begun a series of ships in 1/700 scale. This series is comprised of a number of German and English Battleships, which took part in the Battle of Jutland.

Already in development are the following:

Kronprinz
Grosser Kurfürst
König
Markgraf
Dreadnought

We understand that its Master Box Ltd ultimate aim, with the 1/700 series, to produce models of all the ships from both fleets, which took part in this famous battle.

Interesting!  Any clue if these are to be waterline only, and/or will these be resin or styrene?

Looks like they will be producing two ships, Dreadnought and a Koenig class (all ships of the class, which is pretty much a matter of just different boxes).  It will be interesting to see how far they get with this line....

from their website:

They have a good name in figures, hope it translates into ships

at the 350 scale, we always have the Zvedza offering of the Oriol I guess

Thanks guys for the info. Hi Jon good to hear from you again. Any idea when we can expect that WWI QE ?? I hope we can keep the tread going with more info because this is a great subject it seems to be overlooked for sailing, WW2, and more current subjects.

Not overlooked, just not a lot to talk about!  Every time a 'wish list' of ship models is put up on this site, WW1 warships show up big-time!  It really is a 'forgotten war' as far as most model producers are concerned, which is too bad.... ICM began a line of 1/350 WW1 warships, and managed to get the Koenig class produced, but no British ships, and nothing further from the German side either.  Sure would be nice to see a 1/350 'Lion' or a 'Derfflinger!

This is very true, these ships were innovative for their time and quite majestic and should be explored more in the hobby. The Lion and Derfflinger would be neat subjects or how about even an HMS Tiger.

Yup... And another thing model producers SHOULD realise, is that most of these dreadnoughts had a number of sisterships (usually four ships per class on both the British and German fleets), which should translate into lots of 'different' models that are essentially the same, but in different boxes.... And there are a lot more classes in WW1 for battleships and battlecruisers than WW2 (and armored cruisers, and submarines, and submarine cruisers, and cruisers, and destroyers, etc, etc, etc....).  As a lot of these ships are a fair bit smaller than those of WW2 (average battleship size is about 600' in WW1, vs 700'+ for WW2), it might almost make sense to produce some of these in a larger scale, say 1/250.  But 1/350 is very fine too, and allows good comparisons with the WW2 ships....

Back around 1981 I spent a considerable sum on a nice set of cast metal unpainted ships that could be used with Avalon Hill's Jutland game. They were about 2" to 3" long, and the turrets were separate. Waterline; gosh wish I still had them. Not to HJ, but does anyone know who made them?

last year was the 40th anniversary of the release of Jutland, Jim Dunningan's first board game (the G-D of board wargaming).

I know the pieces you spak about, but have no clue the maker... you could also get a set of old WW2 'recognition" pewter ships (dunno, the scale, they came in a wooden box, 1/1220 ?).

That, my Nolan Ryan rookie cards, few more things I wish I had kept from my childhood ;)

The best small scale metal kits are those by GHQ (1/2400 scale).  They have a very full range of WW1 ships, and I have a large number of them stowed somewhere that I used to use back in my war-gaming days... ALNAVCO also produces a range in 1/1200 scale, but frankly, I like the GHQ's better!

That information on Master Box Ltd. is interesting!  I've never heard of them.  I would really like to see WWI and the pre-Dreadnought era represented more fully.  One area that has also been sadly neglected is that of the Mediterranean Navies.  The Italian and Austro-Hungarian ships are beautiful and should be represented in kits.
