Uss Arizona cowl vent

The new Seaways Ships-in-Scale magazine (one of FSM's competitors) has an article which includes making cowl vents from brass tube & soldering them up.   Of course it was in a larger scale.   

Check the Toms Modelworks website.  He had an aftermarket resin set to correct some of the deficiencies of the kit.  I'm not sure of the contents.    Even though Tom has just passed away the family says they will try to keep the business going.

What size & shape cowl do you need.   You may find some white metal ones in some of the ship fitting dealers such as BlueJacket Shipcrafters or Loyalhanna Dockyard.

If all else fails,  get me a good dimensioned picture.   I have a supply of left over resin kit parts and there are several types & sizes of cowls in the stash. 

 

i usually just glue up (laminate ) some .060 sheet plastic i,ve cut into strips and then drill the top and carve to shape . be careful here though , as some cowl vents are oval or a somewhat egg shape when viewed from the front ..  tankerbuilder

It would have been under sets, but it's immaterial as his set did not have the cowl vent.

I made a reasonable facsimile by heating plastic tubing and bending it 90 degrees.. you have to work it just right to minimize the fold in the acute side, but once it's cooled y ou can saw off the portion you want to use as the cowl and just carve or drill a little bit at the cowl facing to thin the wall down.  Best shot I have is the third one on this page.

tracy  the idea of tubing is good . Here,s another way . Buy some 1/48 scale or smaller bombs from TAMIYA . use the closest sized tubing then cut the rounded nose off the bomb and glue it to the tubing in which you,ve shaped a curved receiving surface then use a little filler ,prime ,paint and ,viola! you have your vent        tankerbuilder
