The Yorktown, as did all Essex ships, went through lots of changes throughout the war. NEW radar masts came and shifted around as the rapid improvements took place.

The Yorktown was unique in having a broad black stripe painted on it flight deck with a smaller red stripe along side at the bow. The ship, being one the early ones, had an athwart-ship catapult forward on its hanger bay. It shows up with sponsons and folding extensions on both sides of the hull. But it wasn't there throughout the ship's life.

There's plenty of good research material available.

Enjoy it.

Mike

Hi All,

I'm an airplane builder, specifically WWII, but have always been attracted to the WWII carriers (has to be the airplane thing).  So, while surfing eBay I found a Trumpeter 1/350 USS Yorktown (CV-10) for a much lower cost than the online stores offer and felt I had to get it.

I'm also a super-detail nut and like adding as much as I can for the more realistic look; AM sets as well as scratchbuilding.  I know the Yorktown (CV-10) was an Essex class carrier so I assume the Eduards Essex set will work with it, so my questions are these;

--What are, if any, the differences between the Yorktown and other Essex carriers?  This may be asking a lot.
--Are there any parts of the Eduards Essex set that can't or shouldn't be used on the Yorktown?
--What other AM sets can I use for CV-10 and it's aircraft?
--What are areas on CV-10 that can be improved with some scratchbuilding?

I welcome and appreciate any and all advice, comments, suggestions on this build.  The last time I built anything that floats was in the early 70s; a USS Missouri OOB, with little to no paint.  I was pretty young then.

Thanks for your help.

Steve

Any AM set for the Trumpeter USS Essex will work for the USS Yorktown II as they are sister ships as both are "Blunt Bow" ships while some of the others are "Clipper Bow" ships but still can use the ESSEX class AM sets. Now if you can find any sets dealing with the Hangar bay the hangar bay definitely needs some work to make it accurate. And the 5"/38's could use some improving or replacement as does the 40mm Bofors and 20mm Orkilerons.

John have you guys put out a Essex class Hangar bay interior yet? I picked up the Hornet Hangar bay you guys at WEM put out.

See John Sheridan's 'Essex Carrier Reference Guide' at SteelNavy for a description of the class and many of the differences & similarities between the units

Hi Steve,

We've got PE sets for the ship itself, for it's light anti-aircraft weapons, for the airwing supplied with the kit, and for the Trumpeter aircraft sets (including interiors!), as well as accurate paints. So that I don't violate FSM's policies for the forum, feel free to e-mail me directly at johnsnyder@onetel.com.

Cheers,
