U-480

Anyone see the program on National Geographic last night? It was about the discovery of U-480 in the English channel. The story behind this Uboat was very interesting. Turns out it was coated in rubber and was a true stealth sub. Allied sonar could not detect it. It wasnt until we broke the Enigma code that we were able to set a minefield trap for her. I have the 1/72 scale Revell type VIIC uboat and am considering doing it up as U-480. How would I replicate the rubber coating?

Maybe coat the model with Plasti-dip?  Other wise sand off the weld and rivet details and paint the moel with various shades of black and gray.

Perhaps you should look into the finish modelers are using for modern subs since they have a rubber coating on them.

Might want to have a look around the SubCommittee forum to see what people are using and also do a google search on modern subs to see what they look like.

I would not go with rubber dip since it would be to thick and would not look realistic, if you wanted a actual rubber coating there is a spray for bumpers that is a thin rubbery type coating many prop builders use.

unless you plan to handle it a lot I would just go with regular paint.

The anechoic tiles used for silencing modern submarines are not easily distinguishable (at least not in small scale) from the tile free surfaces other than a slight color shade difference. Was this U-boat tiled? Your best bet would be to get some pictures of the actual sub.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

According to http://www.uboataces.com/sonar-coating.shtml , the Alberich coating was 4mm thick. I doubt that it would be possible to render this in 1/72 scale as anything other than a coat of paint.
