WIP: DML 1/350 USS Elliot DD967
Posted by JWalker on Saturday, May 2, 2009 9:58 PM
Hello all.

In the works is an oldie but goodie. I found DML's 1/350 Spruance class Destroyer on Ebay a couple years ago and its been sitting around the garage ever since. I also purchased White Ensign's PE detail set and Veteran Models' Resin Harpoon kit. I purchased it opened but in great shape and for around $10. The catch? It wasnt NIB and the previous "owner" had completed the hull and most of the superstructure already.

Why did I choose the Elliot? Its a great story actually. My older brother served on her during his run with the Navy as an I.C. Electrician. My brother was stationed on the Elliot when she was sent to the Persian Gulf during the 1st Gulf War to serve as security patrol and escort in the then hostile waters off Kuwait. I've heard some interesting stories of my brother's deployment and about his travels throughout the Pacific and Middle East. So is this an ode to my brother's sevice? Yes but not entirely. The ship actually has a sentiment with me because on their return trip from the Gulf, family members (males only) of the crew were offered a trip of a lifetime....To rendez-vous with the Elliot in Pearl Harbor and cruise back to Coronado the final leg of their deployment. An 8 day "Tiger Cruise" filled with displays of the ship's capabilities and a few fun events. I was around 13 when I embarked on this trip with a family friend (a boisterous Greek mariner named George and my little brother 9 at the time). It was an awesome experience to say the least. Ill never forget the sights, sounds and smells of the ship. Whether it was feeling the thump in my chest from the 5in guns during starlight demos or watching the Seahawk launch from inside the RAST controller's dugout, I got to experience life on a Navy destroyer and explore the ship on my own terms. Everyday was a new exercise and I was more than happy to wake up in the early hours to get breakfast in the mess hall with all-you-can-drink chocolate milk. The coolest thing by far was watching the CIWS or Phalanx Gatling gun spit out 30mm rounds at a rate that made it sound like a chainsaw. The momentos and pics I have are few but still noteworthy. Spent ammo belt from an m60, a few 25mm casings from the deck mounted Bushmaster and couple 20mm casings from the CIWS and one of the shells from the 5in cannon(makes a great umbrella holder). Its unfortunate that the Elliot was sunk in Fleet training exercises but Ill always remember those great few days I spent with her.

Im still trying to find pics from that trip in hopes of getting some good reference and to post up for those who are interested. But as of this moment I have already begun some of the assembly of miscellaneous items as follows:

The Seahawks were first job of course and I have one of them in the stored config and will be displayed in the open hangar.

The "captain's boat"

The launch davits

The whaler's boat needed to be lengthened and reshaped

Radar scanners and Fire director for the Harpoons

Got 90% done with this Scanning Radar dish just to find out I built the wrong one DOH!
the instructions tell you in 3 paragraphs how to build it and then the last sentence reads. This assembly was fitted only to the USS Hayler

Access doors to the forecastle added over drilled out doorways. The bridge windows have also been drilled out.

Anchor chain and Capstan wheels

Next post Ill tackle the Resin Harpoon kit

Thanks for reading,

James

UPDATE: 5/16/09
Posted by JWalker on Saturday, May 2, 2009 10:24 PM
Still cranking away....

Resin Harpoon launchers completed...

Veteren's Model CIWS kit also completed. Beautiful little gems arent they?

Main mast completed with correct Antenna array...

Some PE details added to the superstructure. Kit platforms were shaved and replaced with PE

Brass barrels for the 5in.'ers

PE platform and scratchbuilt antenna platform added to the aft funnel

Next Ill have to scratch build the RAST control station on the flight deck as the kit does not have one. I distinctly remember this part of the flight deck as I sat in there while watching the Seahawk launch. That was a cool experience! Also need to source a pic or drawing showing where the refueling hose reel was located since the kit instructions are too vague....Any help on this wold be greatly appreciated
Thanks.

Back at it!!!!
Posted by JWalker on Saturday, May 2, 2009 10:25 PM

I've had it hibernating for a while but I am glad to have made more progress on this bad boy in the past couple weeks....

Rear section of the superstructure is coming together slowly....Note the added plumbing in the hanger.

Adding RAST to a non RAST flight deck.

More sub assemblies coming together. All deckhouses are completed along w/ their PE railings

Scratchbuilt a Pylon and Sonobuoy for this SeaHawk

Mocking everything up (w/o mucking it up!!!!!LOL)

Next update will involve paint I swear!

Thanks,

James

Beautiful work ! How do you manage such delicate work with PE? Please keep the photos of your build coming.

Looking real good there. Please keep us updated on the progress. You know, it always makes me feel bad to hear about a ship being expended like that, especially a relatively new vessel like a Spruance class DD. Guess its just the 20 year sailor in me that makes me feel that way. Keep up the great work and keep us posted. Rick M

The Elliot is coming along great! Keep the updates coming.

Tell me, how much extra detail does the Resin Harpoon kit have over the standard ones from  out of the box?

Thanks!!!....Haven't assembled it yet but from the looks of it, the details on the base are finer as well as the ribbing on the launch tubes...The PE set Im using also has an upgrade for the Harpoons but utilizing the kit launch tubes. Perhaps Ill build both and compare...
"Leonidas?" are you Greek???Or just a fan of the 300 ;)

Actually I'm Australian....and a fan of 300!

Seems like both sets of Harpoon launchers are going to come up great no matter which way you build them.

Any plans on upgrading the standard box issued CIWS to resin parts? I noticed the resin CIWS (I forget who makes it) is pretty highly detailed. The reason I ask is I am looking to start the Bunker Hill CG from Dragon and was thinking about swapping out the Phalanx guns with Resin for more detail.

Just a thought. Smile [:)]

I need to look into that...I was thinking of scratchbuilding new barrels (not sure how) and adding extra PE details. I found the Veterans model CIWS kit but sold out on sprue brothers....It looks awesome! I'll probably search Ebay for that kit.

EDIT:

Just found a site w/ that kit in stock....also picked up brass barrels for the 5 in guns:)

The new CIWS will make very fine additions to the ship. Good choice.

Paint is coming along slowly...Been having to backtrack and clean up a few spots that made themselves evident after priming...FInal base coat of Standard Navy Grey (hull) and Dark Grey (decks) have been layed down followed by touching up of the smaller details that scatter the decks that got nicked with the dark grey as i worked the brush around them. I think the biggest challenge has been strategizing the paint process and figuring out what had to be left  unassembled in order to leave room for the brushwork. I used a paasche S/A/E/M to prime and to paint the the entire ship and sub assemblies in standard navy grey then brushed in the dark grey decking afterwards.

Pics should be up shortly on the 1st page 4th post...

Thanks for reading!

FWIW,  Standard Navy Gray was the color used by the Navy from 1919 to late 1941.   SNG is not correct for modern USN applications.    Standard Deck Gray isn't too bad,  but still may be a bit dark for current applications.

Thanks for the info...I researched quite a bit and I know that Haze grey was used in the later fit of this ship just before her deployment to the Persian Gulf. But Testor's Haze grey looks much too light IMO (lighter than SNG) and closer to the color scheme of the Seahawks so I'm saving that color for the Helos.

Had I not mentioned the color used do you think you would have noticed??? I went with SNG as it looks closest to the reference I have...Of course Photos dont always tell the truth and kit instructions call for a 3-part mix for the hull color so I have to guesstimate. Who can say that one grey is better than the other... atmoshperic filtering/ weathering/ different paint batches wlll all cause variations in color scheme so I don't think that any single grey could be the Holy GReyl <(like that pun?:))

Still cranking away at the Elliot in my spare time. Painting is nearly done and the waterline and hull are complete. Decals will go down next followed by some touch up and further weathering before a final coat of matte varnish seals the deal! Some pics of how she sits at the moment....

gingerly laying everything on its side to mask off the waterline...

Hull was painted with Tamiya "Dull Red" Spraypaint decanted and airbrushed

Masts are just being test fitted.

I may go with black on the mast and stacks as I recall this scheme still being used in the early 90's

A close up...

The Seahawk here is ready to go!

Next update will be the final one. Thanks for reading!

Rick,

I know how you feel about a ship being expended that way but, for a "Man of War" isn't a warriors

death more appropriate than the scrapper's torch?  I had tears in my eyes watching the 34 boat

(USS Oriskany) being made into a reef.

^ I've actually come to understand that now... :) Still sad when u think of all the stories, history and the memories of the people who worked on those boats...But I guess target practice is a necessity for building a better Navy...

Hehe..I'm glad I could help! One thing I know is lacking on the internet, are some close up, Hi-res shots of rigging and added decks n such of these ships (especially images of the Helo deck and RAST station!). I don't think I've researched so much on any other model I've ever built. Having my brother and his pics + ship yearbooks + his memories have also helped out a lot. I think he'll be very pleased with the model when it's done.

I was stationed aboard the Elliot from 1995 to 2000, the masts were changed to haze grey in 1993 when they added the Tomahawk launch system, so you would be nore accurate with grey on the masts
