Time we had some SUPERTANKERS in plastic!
Posted by PhantomGhost on Monday, May 4, 2009 4:45 PM
It's great to see Revell trying to do something a bit different with the upcoming Colombo Express container ship but I'd love to see something like the JAHRE VIKING the worlds biggest ship done too.   We get endless grey WW2 battleships but ships like supertankers are totally absent.  Any other supertanker fans out there?

I'll take one of those, absent the charge for the oil though, can't afford it in that scale.

A cool diorama would be the Valdez in Water World.

HEY PHANTOMGHOST !!! I do believe you,ve hit a chord there . I commanded five different tankers for BP /SHELL and my first ship WAS an old T-2. I graduated upward until I was second in command of the largest tanker SHELL had at that time . (The captain had a heart attack) and I was promoted to her captain . She was my command for the next three years . The bad thing about ships this size is one of space ! I did an R.C. model some years ago for a fellow (Who was doing a plane for me ) And it was over 12 feet long so watch what you wish for . I for one would like to see more 1/200 or 1/350 liners like the ANDREA DORIA ,STOCKHOLM and others that plied the seas in quiet splendor or just quietly . The Q.E.2 and the DISNEY ship do nothing for me . They are just HOTELS and MALLS with a hull attached . I personnally would not like to be aboard one of them in the kind of seas we dealt with on the tankers !!!     tankerbuilder

Might be a market for a Maersk Alabama with a USS Bainbridge?

goodmorning!     I do believe that we shipbuilders are NOT being given the selection we want for a reason . The reason is simple MARKETABILITY . There just doesn,t seem to be enough of us that want supertankers, containerships and the other ships of note . The ships that have quietly gone about their business with no or only some notoriety. I personally would like to see as I,ve said, 1/350 or 1/200 models of the ANDREA DORIA ,STOCKHOLM ,NORMANDIE and others . The CONTI BELGICA of the CONTIMAR GROUP would be a good subject for a container ship . The paper model has scads of detail . The CONTI was a smaller (800 +' ) that had her own unloading cranes on board . The Papermodel firm of WILHELMSHAVEN has many I,d like to see in plastic from reefers to the first of the so called supertankers , the LEISELOTTE ESSBERGER. The GERMAN arm of REVELL did do some RHINE RIVER cruise ships ,but they never caught on .TAMIYA , I believe is making the SOYA , a research vessel /icebreaker in 1/350 .That ship can be had two ways . The upgraded version has ALL the p.e. you need to complete her that way and the regular version does not have the p.e. parts . oh well!   tankerbuilder

Modern tankers sell quite well in 1/1250 scale. Let's hope Revell's containership sells well enough for them to take a chance on other modern merchant vessels.

I really like research vessels as well. And you would figure in these "environmental times" they would have more market appeal.

Interesting to read that.   Must have been an experience being in charge of such big ships!

Well there's quite a few kits of passenger liners around and other civilian ships but no manufacturer has even tried doing a modern supertanker, so we don't know whether they'd be good marketability or not.

I can't remember the names off hand (the Meteor being one of them?) but I think Revell do do a few research vessels.

Let's hope so.   Maybe we should contact Revell to see if they'd consider doing a supertanker.   One of the reasons I mentioned the JAHRE VIKING/KNOCK NEVIS is because apart from being a fascinating ship with an interesting history, it could have WORLDS BIGGEST SHIP on the box which might add extra interest.

Hey PHANTOMGHOST !   When it comes to commanding one of these big ships , you could say it was a challenge . The business agent took care of a lot . The captain was both a manager and a diplomat . The biggest advantage (NO OFFENSE HERE!!!!)in working for foreign flag is no union b.s. on what you can have the crew do . If I wanted the deckhouse touched up at sea ,all I had to do was say so !! On AMERICAN flag you can,t sneeze at a crewman without union permission . I was on one U.S. flag ship and because the tugs were on strike they , (the crew ) wouldn,t takethe ship into port , and that with a critical cargo (foodstuffs) . I made more money and with less aggravation with B./P.- SHELL . I also got a chance to meet people from all over the world . The only thing that comes close is my time in the U.S.NAVY .

Yup, I think a supertanker in 1/350 would be pretty impressive.... As for the QE2 and heavy seas, it seems to me I read somewhere that the QE2 ran into a 'rogue wave' off South Africa once that was something over 100' high!

That goes for unions in all industries---they are running the jobs out of the US faster than you can say, "wildcat strike"...unions are just money-making businesses these days...other than that they serve no real purpose, especially since the US is now a socialist welfare state...

Hi phantomghost !!  I went to REVELLS german website and I was to say it calmly, disappointed ! The containership is smaller than 1/350 scale .The CONTI - BELGICA that I mentioned in paper is at least 1/350 ! .The idea of these ships fascinates me , but they will only appeal to some because of the smaller scale . I do build smaller but I don,t really like to (It,s a vision thing ) The U.S.S. CRANDALL is about the smallest I will work with and enjoy . I still re-iterate that I would like to see more freighters , liners , tankers et,al, in at least 1/350 .Larger would be okay too . But , then  I don,t know . I have a ex-soviet destroyer in 1/200 and it is LARGE . Gosh ,just look at REVELLS new FLETCHER , At 1/144 it,s almost two feet long !!  I do believe there will be more in better scales but until then ,I,ll have to do it in paper . The paper models can be used for patterns to build in plastic , I,m doing that with the S.M.S. KRONPRINZ in 1/200 and it,s almost 22 " long . So , I guess we have to wait and see what REVELL does next , hmmmmm.             TANKERBUILDER

ModelWarships ,,,, I applaud your enthusiasm ,but do not agree . I have four 1/1250 ships and I haven,t built them , why ??? Well you cant see any real detail and I personally like to work in sizes where if theres a detail mistake I can correct it without destroying half the detail . I do think they,re CUTE but I cannot consider that size , who wants to build using a jewelers loupe all the time ? Oh , I know people do but after forty some years of modeling it,s still not MY cup of tea . I did a commission some twenty years ago ( THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGER) ON a map to fit under glass in a coffee table . I will NEVER do that again !!! All those little sailing ships , none more than 1 1/4 inch long !!!! Most under 3/4 of an inch in length . !!!!  NO , give me 1/350 or larger .   TANKERBUILDER

1/1250 is mostly acollectors scale. The ships I have are mostly prepainted and built and cast in white metal. There are very few builders who add details.

I think there are plenty of 1/1250 models out there, I would just like the same treatment in 700 scale (my scale of choice). I welcome the new modern merchant ships that are coming.

It certainly sounds like a challenge especially trying to navigate those huge ships into a narrow canal.

I wish they'd do some supertankers in 1/350 or larger too.  They'd be big but still manageable.

Revell just sent me a survey asking about their kits and such. In the end they gave me a big blank box and asked for more. I told them that supertankers and somali pirate boats would be a nice addition to their line. I also advised that I would like to see some building models, like the trade centers, sears tower, empire state and other such buildings. I've never seen anything like that in scale models, just legos.

Not sure what Revell would make of the Somali pirates but great to hear you put supertankers in thereBig Smile [:D].   What you said about buildings is interesting too.
