Revell Cutty Sark Decals from 1969
Posted by wjbwjb29 on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 7:22 PM

Hello;

I bided on and won a 1969 Cutty Sark Model by revell. Everything is there I think because the bags are  sealed. Missing is the bag of rigging line. But my question refers to the decal sheet which looks to be in very good shape except for a slight crease. Are thes decals going to disinergrate when they hit water and is there a way to fix them before that happens? I will only have one shot once they hit water. I dont believe replacments are availible.

Sounds like the 1/96 scale Cutty Sark ( about 3 feet long). Why don't you check with Revell of Germany? These gentlemen are excellent when it comes to help with parts or decals and the CS was reissued a couple of years ago so there are probably new sheets of decals available.Link is easily "Googled".

Thanks I will try that. If all else fails I thought maybe I could scan the decal sheet and print it out on decal paper. Not sure if that would work though. Any thoughts.

Microscale makes a product called Liquid Decal Film that can be used to restore old decals. As I understand it's use the product is brushed on the decal, allowed to dry and forms a clear film which holds the decal together while it is wetted and applied.  I've never used it, but it is supposed to work.  If you try it, you might experiment on some spare decals first.

I have used the Microscale decal film but I airbrush it on mixed with alcohol to keep it from activating the decal before i want to use it and I can testify that it works beautifully and I have used it on the same Cutty Sark kit and it works great!
