2 1:350 Vietnam Essex Class Carriers
Posted by raider-hall on Saturday, June 13, 2009 8:42 AM
scratchbuilding two Nam Essex class carriers. One for myself the other for a friend. All the info comes from Ray Bean, his DVD and articles in past magazines. As with all my models they are to be waterline. The first few photos.                                                                          http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_1992.jpg                                  http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_1994.jpg

Hey, Raider! Looking good. What material are you using? And please give us good hull build details. I have a scratchbuild carrier I am working on. I am scared to start a hull...

sorry I didn't get back to you m60a3. all the cardstock came from a arts&craft store. lots of stuff you can get to scratchbuild in plastic or papercard.  The Oriskany is a guniea pig  for my Hancock. what a swell guy I am. so far it's not bad a little touch up and it should be right on the mark. some photos.  http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2006.jpg   http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2007.jpg                            http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2009.jpg                                               http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2011.jpg                                     http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2015.jpg                                      http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2016.jpg                                      http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2018.jpg                                       http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo95/raider-hall/100_2019.jpg                                      happy modeling

The Toasty-O and the Hanj*b! They both operated with my old boat, the Ranger. Good for you, raiderhall, you are always working on the more obscure carriers. Keep it up.

Hiya Subfixer, well my brithday was yesterday. got somethings that I wanted and then some. Anyway BigO forward half of the ship was rebuild. One HUGE mistake is that I forgot to widen the hull. The 27C's had thier hull widen for the angledeck and heavier ac's. To late for that mistake,Hanny will have the correct hull. The BigO looks O.K.,but if you known your carriers you see the bludder. I'll post later tonight or tomorrow of photos.   happy modeling

I was stationed on the Lexington for my last 10 or 11 months in the Navy. The hangar deck was the same dark gray as the flight deck and the bulkheads were white.

Almost done. The owner will take over next month. The Ranger is standing in for Hancock because I screwup. I'll tell him to give as much detail on the build. Flightdeck can be remove to detail the hangerdeck.

Those are some good looking models.  Are they styrene or paper?  I'm looking at doing a scratchbuild of the Hornet as it was when it picked up the Columbia from Apollo 11.  If you have some decent plans to share with us for the hull, I'd be interested.  Of course, I believe that both Oriskany and Hancock were long hull, right?

Cheers,
Nathan

Hello Nathan, a lot of the Post War Essex class crowd wants a 1/350 angledeck model. That is not gonna happend  from what I hear. Anyway I decide to make my own out papercard & styrene. The hulls as with all my hulls are made out papercard a least 3 sheets layer on top of each. That what give it the strong bond and paint on top as a primer. Nathan Oriskany and Hancock are long hulls. The question I have for you is what scale? I dont use plans,i use lots of photos and 1/350 model of my Trumpy Hornet. And Thank You for the kind comments.

Thanks Raider-Hall.  I haven't settled on a scale yet.  1/400 or 1/300 seems about right, but nothing solid yet.  To be honest, I'm most worried about the hull.  Getting those compound curves and blisters is the most mentally daunting task.  Is papercard able to take putty, after you prime it?

Either way, your builds are looking great, and I can't wait to see them finished!

you did a great job, I have the tycho from the old renwal kit, along with the hancock in 1/350 my dream was to convert the hancock to a vietnam essex.  I was planning on using the reference you used and even wrote ray bean.  I just wish some one with come up with a conversion kit, dude you would be rich if you could make patterns of yours.
