PT Boat
Posted by kestrel0222 on Thursday, June 25, 2009 1:58 PM

I would like to build one of these boats but need some help from you great people. I have only seen a couple different models of the PT boat, one from Revell and another from Revell/Germany, both in 1/72 scale. Are there any differences between these two kits?

I also see that Italeri makes a bigger one, in 1/35 scale. This is quite a bit bigger then the Revell kits. Is the Italeri kit worth the money?

Thanks,

In my opinion yes, go for the Italeri version and add some PE while you are at it.

Revell makes a 1:72 kit of the 80 foot ELCO.  It is currently sold as the PT-109 and has been previously sold as PT-117.  It is a very nice kit and can be made into a very nice represenation.  There are some minor problems with it (scribed decks) which can be lived with or corrected.   There may also be some sink marks.  The kit is 40+ years old and may show some of its age.  It can be found for 10 dollars or less

Even older is Revell's current re-release of their PT212.   It is not 1:72 scale, something entirely off the wall.  Its also represents another class of PTs than the ELCOs.   The molds are probably 50+ years old and are very dated.  The crew are molded integrally with the guns.   The guns are poor - one looks like an old movie camera.  It makes a good bathtub toy.   Revell was trying to ride the nostalgia train.

The Italieri PT is big.  It is in 1:35 scale, or roughly twice the length of the 1:72 kit.    It is a late-war version of the 80 foot ELCO.   It will be more expensive than the Revell 1:72 scale offering, probably on the order of a hundred dollars.   It can be made into a very nice and impressive model, but it is big (display space) and daunting (expense if I screw it up).    I wouldn't consider building the Italieri kit until I had several complex armor kits under my belt.

If you are a relative NOOB, I'd consdier the Revell 1:72 scale kit.    You can see elsewhere on this page what can be done with it.   Later as your skills grow you can add aftermarket items to complete the details which are soft or lacking onthe Revell

Thanks for all the information, it will help a lot with my decision as to which model that I will eventually get. I have been modeling (mostly aircraft) since I was about 7 or 8 years old, I am now 49. Modeling experience is not an issue, I am just relatively new to ship modeling, only built (2) other ship models to date.

I have always wanted to build a PT boat, I think now just might be the right time for me to start one of these models!

 Thanks again,

Hello sir,

It all depends on which scale you're more comfortable with and also, what you can/and am willing to afford/pay.

The 1:72 Revell kit is less expensive, has only a few flaws (owing to its age - it's older than you and me) but, in my opinion, is a great  kit.  WHITE ENSIGN MODELS produces many aftermarket items for it which are simply amazing, their COLOURCOATS line of paints is also a great help.  GATORMASKS do make painting masks for it as well.

The Italeri kit is a great model as well - but it is big and very expensive.  It depicts one late war "sub-series" of a class and a boat from a squadron that never saw action.  You can depict a little earlier boat with some added guns and the like, but if one wants to make a early to early-mid war boat, it will require A LOT of scratchbuilding to back-date it.

Thanks Garth,

I will probably go with the Revell kit, for a couple of reasons. The first, is the high price of the Italeri kit and of course, its size! I am somewhat limited in space to display this model, as I have many, many on display already. Thanks to everyone for ALL your comments/suggestions in regards to this project!!
