Oscar Class Submarine Kursk - color question
Posted by Stuart06 on Monday, June 29, 2009 1:16 PM

I am currently doing my first model of a sub "The Kursk" kit from Revell in 1:350 scale.  I will probably start painting this weekend and want to get the right colors.

It seems in the instruction it is showing a dark grey, but the pictures I have seen is black.

So what colors should the hull be above and below the waterline.  It looks like the whos sub should be very dark grey or black.  I see that there is a front part that is light grey.

Tamyia paints if possible, if not something else that is available in most LHS

Thanks

Russian and/or Soviet submarines are normally painted black above the waterline and red below. Some also have a white waterline. Their masts and antennaes were silvery-gray with black tops.  I have also seen some photos showing a few boats with the silvery-gray bow section below the waterline, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

There were some interesting photos of the Kursk after she had been raised showing her out of the water. They may be online somewhere.  They would be very helpful to you.

Good luck!
