The official Finished USS Ticonderoga in water post
Posted by Fly-n-hi on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 7:32 PM

Hi guys.

I originally posted some pics of my finished Hasegawa 1/700 USS Ticonderoga in a previous thread.  Thanks for all the nice comments to those who posted.

Now that I've completed the water base I can say that the build is officially finished.  I figured I'd just go ahead and start a new thread so that the pics would be near the top of the post.  That way you don't have to scroll way down the page to see them.

So here are some pics for your enjoyment:

This was my first ship so obviously this was my first try at water.  I used 30 minute epoxy and set the model in an 11x17 picture frame.  Then I used Liquitex Acryllic gel to create the water texture.  Then I added some waves based on some info I saw on another site.  The colors are Galleria Winsor Blue and Titanium White.  After that I brushed on a watered down layer of the acryllic gel to make it glossy.

The flash really brings out the blue in the water.  In normal light is seems alot darker.  The waves are a little wimpy, too.  Hopefully I'll get better as I build more ships.

Any comments/criticisms are welcome.

Nothing wrong with the waves looking whimpy at 1/700; good job!

HEY - fly- in - hi Thats a nice looking dio . You did real well with the water . When I tried doing a dio , I succeeded in about a force eight sea , ( It was a coast guard cutter on rough weather rescue duties ). I had never done a dio before , and I placed first in class in a local show . You could,ve knocked me over with a very small feather !!!! Funny ,though , I haven,t been able to do a successful dio since , they just never seem to look quite right .-----TANKERBUILDER

Thanks for the comments.

I definitely have to say thanks to all who have posted their tips and techniques on these boards.  Because of that I was able to get good results pretty quickly.

Next time I may try to use Apoxie or something similar to get the waves that are created by the ship...or just large swells in the ocean.  I was a little afraid to try it this time because I didn't want to botch it all up.  I guess I could just practice on a scrap piece of plastic or something.

On a side note does anybody know who sells spare 1/700 planes?  I googled it but couldn't find any.  Does any body have any they aren't going to use?  I'd like to put more on the deck.

Did you check any of the online shops? Trumpeter makes some pretty good 1/700 scale aircraft. I believe you can find them at Squadron, Sprue Bros., and Great Models.

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

The 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron the only Squadron to get an Air to Air kill and an Air to Ground kill in the same week with only a F-15 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/Mikeym_us/

I did find sites that sold them, but they were all sold out.  I'll keep looking of course but I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.

Thanks!

Ha!  I'm way ahead of you.  I bought one a few days ago.Smile [:)]  Now that I have an idea how to make water I think I'd like to tackle some bigger ships although I'm gonna have to practice attaching PE now.

Hopefully it wasn't a carrier because they cost alot lets see PE extra aircraft crew figures Pe just for the aircraft. Heck I have 2 Trumpeter WWII AC carriers and the USS Nimitz and had to buy a full air wing for all three.

fly-n-hi That is still a great job as I already said . Don,t be worrying about swells and stuff just yet . You can add some secondary waves from the ships movement through the water .They are present about a third of the way back on the sides at a closer angle to the ship . You did such an awesome job with that bow wave and it,s your first . Go for it in 1/350 ,I wanna see !!!   tankerbuilder
