not arson unless done on purpose with knowledge that the cleaner will catch on fire. more then likely just stupidity.

what was the cutty sark 200 years or more old! can't remember, anyway she was an old lady that needed love and care, so what do you do leave a vacumm cleaner on, which then over heated and started a fire, which engulfed the ship, thats arson in my book

The Willem replica had a sort of meeting/party space on one of the decks with a kitchen to supply drinks and meals. The fire was apparently caused by a short circuit in the kitchen. Impressive looking as the Willem maybe was, the replica of the Batavia is more accurate. The Willem was up for sale anyway and there weren't many takers in sight at this moment. As for new builds : a replica of the Zeven Provincieen is being built in Lelystad at this very time, think I posted some snaps about two years ago on this forum.

Cheers guys,

Julian

You seem to be implying the loss of the two ships was due to arson-  where does that come from?   (Did I miss something?)

The link to the Dutch fire doesn't say anything about a cause, and a quick google search turned up a number of articles about the cause of the Cutty Sark fire being a vacumm cleaner that was left running and caught fire....

Dear Julian:  Living in Holland, please inform us if there any attempt to rebuild another replica of the Indiaman, Prins Willem.

Montani semper liberi !    Happy modeling to all and every one of you.

It would have been a real loss if the Batavia had burned down.

The down side to historic ships and aircraft - when they go, it's usually totally. Sad day for the Dutch.

The Prins WIllem replica built in 1985 went up in smoke yesterday.

While not the original, it is still a terrible loss.  Boohoo [BH]
