Small Armed Ship's Boat
Posted by Vagabond_Astronomer on Saturday, August 1, 2009 6:44 PM

As a temporary break from the Imai Santa Maria, I picked up the 1/72 Zvezda "Medieval Lifeboat". While it apparently is not medieval, it is a wonderful little model, fitting for an 18th or 19th century ships boat, 18' in length.

That said, does anyone hae any info on small armed ship's boats of that same period? The model can easily be converted into a 24' boat in 1/96, so there is a little latitude to work with.

A very good reference for ship's boats (from the mediaeval period up to the early 20th century) is the Chatham book "The Boats of Men-of-War". You can find this book quite cheaply second-hand nowadays, it includes many plans and contemporary drawings + photos.

Photos of Panart's "Armed Launch" wood kit might also be a useful source of reference. This represents an early 19th century pinnace of about the same size as the Zvezda one (in a much larger scale). It's a "HECEPOB" kit, true, but nicely detailed and would be a good source of inspiration for painting + detailing the little Zvezda "Lifeboat" kit.

I fitted two small guns to the ship's launch when I built my Chebec:
