Nichimo Japanese colors
Posted by Jeffry on Sunday, August 9, 2009 1:50 AM

Hello everyone

I have acquired three Nichimo model ships.  Asagumo (DDK115), Kikuzuki (DDA165) and Takatsuki (DDA164) all 1/200.  The instructions are in Japanese.  That is fine for assembly.  I can follow the pictures.  My problem is the painting colors.  Does anyone know of a Japanese to English translation for a color chart.

Any help will be appreciated.

Jeff

Jeffrey:

If no one can translate Japanese for you, the colors for Japanese warships were dependent on where they were built or last repaired. The Asagumo was built at Kure so its overall color would be Kure grey with parts of the deck in lineoleum brown. The lower hull would have been a reddish brown like the color of red oxide primer. I couldn't find out much on the other two. You could try asking on Steel Navy or Model Warships as I know there are people on those forums who would probably know. Tamiya makes the grey colors for all four of the prime Japanese ship building locations including the deck color. They come in spray cans and bottles. I've used them with excellent results especially the sprays. I hope you'll post some pictures when you're done building them. I have the 1/200 Yamato and have been tempted to get one of these kits to go with it. Hope this helps.

Caramonraistlin's suggestions are correct for the WW2 IJN Asagumo (an Asashio-class destroyer, I think) but if your kit has the hull number DDK115 then it is the post-war JMSDF destroyer. (I have Nichimo's kit of its sister ship, Minegumo). Your other two kits are also JMSDF ships, of a different class.

Unfortunately I don't know much about JMSDF paint colours! I don't think any model paint suppliers make exact matches for their colours; I believe WEM's Colourcoats range originally included them, but they were discontinued due to lack of sales. My suggestion would be to do a web search for some colour photos and then find a paint which is the closest match.

Here's a photo of Takatsuki. The colour appears to be a medium-to-light neutral grey, darker than USN Haze Gray.

A fellow modeler asked similar question in a local webboard and someone suggested "Mr.Color" paints with specific no. as follows:

IJN Ship floor: No.32 (Dark Gray)

IJN Lynolium floor: No.41 (Red Brown)

IJN Wooden floor: No.44 (Tan)

IJN Ship hull: No.29 (Hull Red)

Pictures of paint set and color table are available in this thread:

Hope this help.

Hello everyone

EPinniger was correct. My ships are JMSDF destroyers. Model Maniac your colors are correct for WW II Japanese destroyers.  My destroyers are more modern.

Does anyone know where I can get White Ensign Models JMSDF Grey(M 14) and  JMSDF Deck Grey(M 15) paint.  WEM does not have it in their On Line Catalogue.

I have been looking all over the Internet.

Thanks,  Jeff
