Its the same kit you made 30 years ago.  The molds themselves are probably closer to 50 years old.

It is pure 50s/60s state of the art.  However with some judicious work and the brass aftermarket set from Gold Medal Models it can be made into a very nice representation of a late-interwar 4-Pipe destroyer.

It does not represent the Campbeltown as expended at St Nazaire.   The actual vessel was modeifies to represent a Mowe-class German gunboat.   The two after funnels were removed and the two forward were cut down.   Gun tubs and armament changed.

As a US destroyer -- fill and sand the wooden deck planks.  the decks were steel.   The deck is also too flat.  It needs some camber (arch) in it.   The guns are primative and need some attention

It's a nice old kit with lots of potential.

I think it is Steelnavy.com that has several of those built up on there. Some really beautiful ones. I got the kit as hand me down back in the 70s and modified it to look be USS Ward at Pearl Harbor based on the few photos I had back then. Mainly adding shields to the gun mounts from sheet plastic and such. I am hoping Revell reissues this kit along witha few other of their ships in the not too distant future.

Here is a build article by James Corley from Nautilus Models.  The article itself is probably 10 years old.    James built the kit up as a RN Lend-lease destroyer in western approaches camouflage

This is CAMPBELTOWN in RN service, but prior to conversion for the St. Nazaire raid.  If you want drawings of her as modified for the raid, try getting a copy of my Anatomy of the Ship HMS CAMPBELTOWN through interlibrary loan.

Al's book is indispensible if you intend on detailing the old Revell kit, or any of the other 4-pipe kits.

Hey ,detailfreak ; I got a tip for you . Pick up SQUADRON /SIGNAL WARSHIPS#19 The book is all about FLUSH DECK DESTROYERS "in action ". On the back is a painting of the "CAMPBELTOWN " as modified into a m`owe( excuse the spelling ) class as she was that fateful day . By the way she was painted "mountbatten pink"(plymouth pink) when she headed for ST.NAZAIRE.There is on page 14 a nice photo of "BUCHANAN " before she was loaned to the british and then used in the mission. The book states she was a WICKES CLASS DD75 to DD 185 ( she was DD 131) I would recommend the purchase of this book . It will help you immensely. I hope this adds more to your desire to build her . Remember though , the WICKES class did NOT have wooden decks !!!They did have a noticeable camber though !! TANKERBUILDER

Actually this kit was reissued by Revell Germany in late 2008. It should be easy to find from European eBay sellers, if US hobby shops haven't got it yet. The reissue is quite reasonably priced, at £8.99 (around $15)

Being a fan of both "four-piper" destroyers and large-scale models, I have 4 of these kits! Haven't actually built any yet, though I hope to get round to building one once my Revell 1/144 Fletcher is completed. This will probably be a standard USN ship in 1940 fit, I hope to convert one of the others to a RN convoy escort and another to HMS Campbeltown as modified for the St. Nazaire raid.

As Ed Grune mentions, the "Anatomy of the Ship" book for HMS Campbeltown is invaluable for building a 4-piper model in any scale (though, as the book focuses on Campbeltown, it doesn't cover post-1941 fits). This book is currently quite reasonably priced both new and second-hand ($20 on Amazon.com)

I built this kit as a kid in the 70s. How does it build up OOB without a lot of aftermarket goodies? It might be a good cheap just for fun build if it is halfway decent without a ton of work.

It's a wonderful kit. Has a great feeling of that era.

Look at this, it'll get you interested. The Point Honda disaster. You're a California fella.

Point Honda is in Vandenburg AFB. That's the Southern Pacific in the background, where track inspectors found dazed sailors looking for help. I've got a library of SP stuff, in fact I'm in an article in Forbes in November about my collection.

Thanks, I haven't built a ship since 2005 when I did a Revell Assault carrier for a co-worker who had served on the ship. I'll keep my eyes open for one of these kits. I've been to Vandenberg a couple of times for training, I think Pt Honda is just up the road from the training center.

Odd thing is I know about the Pt Honda disaster because of the wildland fire that killed Vandenberg's base commander, fire chief and asst fire chief in the 70s. The fire was in the same area.
