Memo to Grem56

Memo to Grem56: The Netherlands has, and still have a rich maritime history. With such closeness to the sea, I would think Holland would offer model kits manuafactured there, rather than rely on foreigners to produce models of her famous ships.  Your opinion.

Years ago, I bought a Corel kit of the PRINS WILLEM, manufactured in Italy. It is one of those HECEPOB model kits that Professor Tilley has scorn on the subject of its quality. Putting that aside, I would think Holland would be the logical country to offer a kit of the PRINS WILLEM rather than Italy. Just my thought.

                                          Montani semper liberi !

Happy modeling to all and every one of you.

Hi Crackers, in view of your rather regal demand for my opinion what else can I do but respond Wink [;)] I don't think there are any big enough Dutch model companies around able or willing to make that sort of investment. I do think Revell of Germany are missing the boat (oh my lord, I kill myself with these puns Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]) by not following the build of the Zeven Provincieen in Lelystad. If there ever was a chance to make a new 1/96th scale sailing ship model this it.

The Prins Willem is rather "carbonized" after the fire. I took some photos recently in Den Helder and you can see that the beautiful sailing ship look was only skin deep ! Just feast your eyes on the ugly steel framework that is left:

Cheers,

Julian

I ask this question out of genuine ignorance:  are any scale model kit manufacturers - plastic, wood, resin, paper, or otherwise - headquartered in the Netherlands?  I recall some references here in the Forum to some beautiful small-scale seventeenth-century Dutch warship kits that were cast in resin - but it sticks in my mind that they may have been made in England.

It's unquestionably true that the great Dutch seafaring tradition has been neglected by the existing companies.  I was lucky enough to spend a little time there (quite a few years ago); I was impressed with the number and quality of Dutch maritime museums.  (I suspect Holland may have the greatest number of maritime museums per capita of any country in the world.  Maybe somebody can correct me.)  The number of Dutch participants in web forums and, for that matter, modeling magazines, makes it clear that the country has a fine modeling tradition and a solid, active modeling community.  But are there any Dutch kit manufacturers?

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

As you say John, there is one firm that makes small size resin models and I can't for the life of me think of it's name.

I believe Aritec makes (or did make) resin kits in the Netherlands.  Not sure if they are still a going concern.
