1/350 ffg updates
Posted by armyrn on Thursday, September 3, 2009 10:16 AM
with the release fo acd 1/350 perry class, we can now model this class of ship.. while researching my old ship uss doyle ffg39.. I have found the navy removed the Mk13 missle launcher because they phased out the sms-1 missile.  So the disk just remains post 2004.  I don't know what they replaced it with. just some fyi..

US Figs have pretty much been left un-armed with missiles.   They should now just be termed Fast Frigates (FF).   Many Perrys have been decommissioned and some have been transferred to other countries.

In addition to the single-armed launcher equipped Perrys,  the twin-armed launcher equipped Aegis cruisers have been decommissioned, leaving just the VLS-equipped versions in service.

The Aussies have also removed the launcher from their Perrys (Adelaides ?),  but they have added other offensive capabilities including VLS cells.   The RoC have added additional guns.   I'm not sure what the Spaniards have done with theirs.

To keep this subject on modeling -- I just received a set of decals from Iron Shipwright for the short-hulled Perrys.   This set used to be in the ISW resin kit which has now been dicontinued.  The set includes hull numbers and names for all the short-hulls as well as helo deck & VERTREP markings.  Also missile foul-lines, hangar door markings, and bridge & helo control windows (with windshield wipers).    The Academy kit decals only allow the Perry and the deck markings are not nearly as nice.

I have the WEM PE set for the Academy Perry as well as their Seasprites.  The kit-provided SH-60 is incorrect for the short-hull version.    I'm thinking of doing either the Daniel Gallery or the Chesty Puller.    I'm sure that you know that the Academy kit will make into a long-hull with the addition of the non-described hull & deck parts which are included.

Picked up and looked at and put down the now-separately available PE for the Yankee Modelworks long-hull Perry two weeks ago at the IPMS Nats.  YMW has also discontinued their kit in light of the Academy kit.  About all that would be different in that set would be the PE lattice masting and the antenna leads.   The masting looks like it needs to be round vs flat.

John at WEM indicated that they also had a PE set for the Perry by a Chinese manufacturer, but he couldn't tell me what was new/different/better than his set.

Served aboard the Lewis B. Puller when I was in the Navy Reserve, all of Chesty's medals and awards are displayed on the mess deck.  We were conducting counter-drug operations.

Actually the Aussies kept the launcher and added a VLS infront of it.

I built one from a company called Modelcraft and it was the long hulled version...which i did up as the Rueben James.....which was the ship used in the Tom Clancy novels "Red Storm Warning" and the Hunt for the Red October" and the real ship was used in the filming of the movie............Gary............ps I have plenty of reference pix I took of Perry class Frigates when they were here at the Port of Milwaukee during the Great Lakes tours, I have pix I took aboard the Perry, Antrim, Estocin, Stark( before the Iraqi Missile attack)and the Samuel B Roberts (before she hit a mine in the persian gulf)

I would love to get ahold of those images. Can you post them someplace, or is there a good way to get ahold of you?
