Comparison of Constitution Kits
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 18, 2003 11:06 AM
Do you know anything about these two kits?

Revell AG Germany 1/96 U.S.S. Constitution - RVL 05602 List price, $121; sale price, $99.99

Revell USS Constitution 1/96 Scale RMX85-0398 (List price $71, Sale price, $46 )

Are these the same kit?

If not, which one is better.

The same. Revell Gmb does cleaner mouldings though. In my humble opinion .

I just sent back a Revell Germany kit because the plastic was too soft and was full of flash. I'd try for the Revell/Monogram kit. Moldings are about the same, but a lot cheaper. BTW, you can get the older kits, with better plastic and cleaner molding, on e-bay for between $20 and $50. Depends on how many are being listed at a time. I have both a 1976 release that I bought new 9more of a keepsake) and 1979 release I just bought for $28.00 and these kits were far superior in quality than the new kit from Germany.

Hello all!

I built this kit as a kid in junior high/high school, about 1980. I bought the kit again in 1991, and didn't get to starting on it until just last year. The difference between the kits is amazing! The 1991 kit has more flash, more prominent sinkholes, softer and more fragile plastic, and overall poor moulding. It's been a bear to get things to fit properly, and I snapped the fore topgallant mast just trying to sand it smooth. The included thread is really poor compared to what used to be included with the kit.

What happened???!!! Don't they even care anymore about putting out a decent product???

Now I'm working on the Heller Victory 1/100, and there's quite a bit of difference in terms of clean molding, fit, quality of plastic, and detail.

On the revell kit there are only two real glaring mistakes. The Cannon Portholes, which are incorrect style and the decorations on the stern. You can fix both problems rather easy.

On the door problem, drill a hole in the middle of each port hole of appro. size and then slice each door in half. Drill two more holes in the upper section and fix it on the model. The next is even better, simple remove the extra stern decoration from the plactic.
