Any Good Nauticle reciepes out there?
Posted by Big Jake on Sunday, September 6, 2009 5:23 PM

I got to talking this morning with a friend and the subject come up on the food sailors were subjected to in the 18-1900's.  I explained while, not all that tasty, it was filling.  Does anybody have a cook book with some of the older recp. in them that they can share?

I'll try a few, what the heck.  I know I can order from England some auth. sea biscuits, but I really lake the few remaining teeth I have, so unless I soak them in run, I'll pass on thoese, anything from your kitchen?

Not sure about the food recipes, but I can give you the genuine recipe for Grog!

Generally crews aboard the Royal Navy during the age of sail were quite well looked after compared to those who lived on shore and actually had quite a good diet when looked at carbs, calories etc as work and battle onboard ship was hard and the captain and officers knew that no crew meant no ship! THey had fresh food and fruit whenever possible and with the Rum Ration, wine and beer available (remember that water stored in cascs went off quite quickly) must have spent a considerable amount of time quite happy!!

Reply here if you want the grog recipe, you can still get the genuine ingredients today!

Lobscouse and Spotted Dog: Which It's a Gastronomic Companion to the Aubrey/Maturin Novels (Patrick O'Brian).  Available from Amazon.  A cookbook detailing the meals/food in the novels.  The two authors researched the dishes and actually cooked the stuff.  Interesting browsing (please forgive the pun).
