CG rollover boat
Posted by wing_nut on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 10:03 AM

Hey ship guys and gals.

A buddy of mine that has a boat and invited me to go watch the off shore boat races this past Sunday.  Perfect weather and the water was like being on a lake.  Anyway... there was a CG rollover boat on duty and I thought you guys might like to see a few pics.

Here's a couple of action shots

Hi Marc

Nice photos, where was the race held?

The Coast Guard craft is a 47' Motor Life Boat, and yes, it will roll over and right itself if it "catches a wave". Glencoe's 1:48 scale CG craft is an earlier version of a 36' motor life boat, it's lineage can be traced back to mid 19th century England. The Royal National Lifeboat Institute's pioneered the idea of a self righting rescue boat. Of course 'way back then the boats were propelled by oars and sail. In 1880 the Brits gave us an example of their revolutionary boat, and in 1966 we repaid the favor by giving them an example of our innovative USCG 44' MLB. The 44' MLB served for over 48 years here in the USA(and in 6 other nations), the "new" 47 MLB replaced it.

PS the Canadian CG also uses a version of the USCG 47' MLB, our CG doesn't paint their MLB's anymore, but our Canadian neighbors 47's are a thing of beauty, judging by your pics, our 47's look like they belong in a third world navy...My 2 cents [2c]
