F-Boat Help!
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 21, 2003 5:47 PM
A plea from a friend of mine:

"Hi;
I am making a German naval barge. I've posted this in every naval warfare forum I could find, all without luck:
In 1942-43, the Germans used "f-boats" (actually landing craft designed for "operation Sea Lion" ) to carry supplies across the Mediterranean. I believe the German designation was "MarineFahrPrahme". They were also manufactured by the Italians, as Motozattera, though I am unclear if they were operated by the Italian Navy or by the Germans.
I have been unable to find much on these modified landing craft, and was wondering if anyone could direct me to a good source of drawings, photos, and other info? Also, I need to know what color they were painted. I've seem some in a single color, others in a "zebra-stripe" camouflage. The only info I have on this is a Lockheed Hudson pilot's description as a "gray-green". Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I greatly appreciate any help or direction you might offer. This is my "last gasp"......."

Have you been over to modelwarships.com? There are some very good historian types over there who might help.
One reference I can suggest, although I have not been able to find a copy myself it has been recommended by others, is "Die Deutschen Krieggshiffe". There are several editions spanning various times of the German navies, and English text versions are available also.

Good luck,
Bruce

You're welcome, I hope your friend can find what he is looking for. Let me know if he is able to locate that reference book, I'd like a look at it myself.
Regards,
Bruce

In researching information for the Japanese LST 150 that Umi constructed I came across a photo of a German tank transport. It was a B&W photo of it under way. It appeared very much as a simple barge with a central aft pilots cabin that stood above the height of the tanks that were on board. It stated that it carried a 3" gun and a twin 40mm and several machine guns. I am looking for this photo as I do not seem to have saved it.
The term "F" boat for a German vessel, to me has always referred to a small coastal escort, about the size of the T 1-15 series but with inferior machinery.
The MFP were to me a tank transport very similar to the allied LST's but with a lower profile.
This is a link to a drawing of a MFP:

Ooh, Ok, now that I see the "MFP" designation, I found some things pertaining to landing craft.
MPF Typ D 7

Although I did find one reference to "MFP Type C 1943 "F-lighter"

The photos that Umi provided are what I was looking at with regards to landing craft for teh Germans. On the link below from Umi's post
http://heninen.net/laatokka-war/english.htm
there is a photo of the German landing barges. It is my impression that the LST which she provided a photo of a model, is not the " F-boat". It is my impression from the information, that the barges ( the large flat moveing dock) is the F-Boat.

I remember reading a book on PT boats in the Med. and they refered to attacking F lighters which were armed German Barges - also Brit sub activity in the Med refered to them also - I seem to recall a pcture of one in the book - can not think of the book title but it may tweak someone's memory.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
