Italeri 1/35 Schnellboot driving me nuts - back to the medication!
Posted by snapdragonxxx on Monday, October 19, 2009 6:18 PM

Hi Chaps - Just need to vent a while!

My original Schnellboot build has been destroyed by little fingers that got into my hobby room (fortunatly the trumpeter 1/16 King Tiger II came through without any damage whatever!!). No more kiddie sitting here! I've attempted to drydock the boat for repairs but due to bits going missing in action and the amount of damage little fingers caused even a proper drydock would tow the wreck out and sink it with gunfire.

This leads me to bring out the second one I had stashed under my bed. I have decided to do a "proper" dockyard job and install a full R/C kit. THis will be the first time ever I have tackled a project like this and while aprehensive over the changes needed and making the hull fully unsinkable I do look forward to the challenge of learning something new.

Over the past week I have been painting the hull and trying to brush paint ( I don't use airbrushes - too complicated - I'd only end up getting more paint on myself than the bloody model) Schnelboot Weiss (Vallejo Model Color White Grey 70993) my sanity is fast coming unravelled.

I seem to be putting coat after coat after coat of the stuff on and not getting anywhere thinned down or streight out of the bottle. Earlier this evening one of my stables staff watched in amazement as I downed a full six 0.5L bottles of german beer in about an hour and grumped about the hull while I did it. THe conversation intimated that I would end up in a nice cosy room with soft padded walls and ceiling for a couple of years and the therapy would include building an entire squadron of Schnellboots!

Anyway. Being Ex-forces and suffering a mild (!!??!!) form of PTSD THe Doctor has put me back on my "happy tablets" It's not a mental depression but a physical depression (I'm still working on what that is!). I came off them for a while to see what would happen but my temper and fuse length shortened considerably to the point when a local government Health and Safety official lectured me on political corectness and womens lib in front of my stables staff my parade ground response could be heard 5 miles away and the girls had to lock me in the office for a while.

My office waste paper basket has lots of foot shaped dents in it and I restart my medication tomorrow morning. I tried to use my modelling as a therapy but I'm not sure it works!

Anyway..... if anyone has some advice on getting the white on with a brush I would be grateful and anyone has experience of fitting 3 engines, props and rudders to get this lursson effect thingy I would greatly appreciate your input.

Well - It's time for my injections, tablets and the white jacket with the arms that fasten round the back and my nice cosy soft room where I can bounce off the walls without hurting myself to my hearts content.

Happy Mental health to all suffering modellers out there.

James

You should prime the entire model from a rattle can (Maybe testors camo gray) then the brush painting would be easier. You must use very good artist red sable brushes if you must brush paint.

Personally on a model that big you may want to get a cheap all purpose airbrush for $10 and use a can of propel to put on your main finish colors.

Lots of good advice is available over in the painting forum. AND keep drinking....

I would give that small child a hug and send him on his way, a model can be replaced, a little one learning can not. I came home one day and found my clipper destroyed, I got mad yelled, I buried my son at 19. I would give anything for him to come in and break a model right now.

That is a sad story my friend. Our, (my wife and mine), firstborn son died after three weeks in hospital, a breech birth that when totally wrong.........

I can't imagine how hard it is to have to bury a 19 year old son, burying my boy ripped me up badly so I figure it must have been hell for you. Go in peace friend,

Julian
