Where can I get 1/72 scale wire rope?

Buy some really thin armature wire- should always have a supply anyhow. Three strands, twist and there you go. Plus unlike thread it will go where you want it to.

That sounds perfect.  Umm..what gauge should I get and what exactly is "armature wire"? I've seen some *really* thick stuff called that at art/craft stores, but nothing tiny-scale enough for my purposes atm.

I buy at an electronics store, the kind where the genius geeks go, but they aren't hard to find. It comes all the way down to 40 gauge, which is 3 thousands. A wire rope might be three strand at 1/4" each, which at 1/72 would be about 40 gauge. Great stuff for ignition harness, cockpit pipe.

You might look at Stranded Beading Wire at your local Bead Shop or Craft Store.  It's 21-strand wire, usually Stainless, in various diameters like 0.014" and 0.019".  Divide 21 strands into 0.014 and that has to be some REALLY skinny wire!  Leave it as is and you have ready made steel cable.  Some of the thicker bead wire is even 49 strand.
