Klomuschel--I have ben in this location for 18 years , I work on my models for 3 to 6 hours a day , 7 days a week "unemployed" , except when I am fighting to post picturs--witch can take up to 5 hours out of my day.  At some point-I hope to post the picturs of my model colection , for the people on this sight to use as a reference.

Santa:

Thank you so much for uploading the Belle Poule. It is really a fantastic looking ship. And your build is great.

By the way: You model build output is quite stunning. How many hours a day do you happen to build models?

I more kinda of the guy who builds only one model at a time. My model output is not that great (I am training about 5000 miles a year on my road race bicycle and this takes a lot of my spare time). However, maybe I should start building models in parallel.

Thanks

there you go Santa

This is how you do it.

1) Go to your photobucket and bring up the picture full size.

2) Right click on picture and select 'properties'

3) Highlight the full picture reference in box that appears

4) Right click copy

5) Go to your Finescale post.

6) write img in square brackets, then paste your reference followed by [/img] and the pic should appear.

Give it a go.

ps for some reason [img] doesn't appear when typed as such in the above line.

the insteuctions tell you to run threds out thoes holes-before- you glue the hull together , but I didnt due that on mine--I glued eyes in all the holes , and tied the shrouds to them.

welcome to the forums!

I think it's going to get down to how realistic you want your build to be. if you are not happy with the rigging plans you can order rigging plans from wooden ship kits to supplement. One website that I know you can order plans from is http://www.modelexpo-online.com/ if you contact their customer service they should be able to tell you how much the plans will cost. I built the airfix wasa and lindbergs "jolly roger" kit last year and didn't use any blocks. mainly because i was building on a budget and the size would have been hard to work with. i instead use loops from a cheap necklace that i bought at walmart for a couple of dollars.

After seeing these pictures it makes me realize that i should retake these with my new camera and lighting set up.

Thanks great build.

Has anyone ever thought of kind of a concerted effort as we know it from the open source software community in so far as to set-up a site where one can post drawings of rigging plans and suggestions !!!dedicated to one particular model kit!!!. For example capable souls like the ones of Prof. Tilley could show us how to rigg lets say the Airfix Wasa by means of easy to understand rigging steps (rigging for dummies). Even if someone is not interested in all the technical terms and meanings of rigging in the end he will end up with a decent model.

Hi Santa: I would very much appreciate it if you manage it to post some (easy to access for us) images of your Heller Belle Poule (you mentioned the kit it in some of your recent posts).

It is quite strange and it seems the Belle Poule is not a sought after kit according to the available images one can find of the finished kit on world wide web. I mean one can easily buy the kit (as I did and it was in stock) but no one seems to be building it.

Thanks and greetings from Scotland

I'm currently working on a 1:196 Revell Constitution. There are a couple of places where I'm using small Model Expo wooden blocks to represent large blocks on the model, but mostly I'm using the knot/white glue/paint method.

Hi there

I have a Phd in physics and happen to be a scientist at the university for a living but rigging a model ship is above my abilities.

The overall quality of my IMAI Santa Maria was quite good and the wood even though only plastic has more of a genuine wood like look. However, one can get the IMAI Santa Maria as kind of new release from moduni for about 100,- euro. In my humble opinion this is way above what the kit really delivers in terms of what you get for the money; I mean you can get the Heller La Reale De France for 100,- euros.

What is your overall impression of the Heller Le Belle Poule? I only found the following two related sites:

http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/woodship-model/article?mid=468&sc=1

and

http://modelshipworld.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6818&sid=5d7b2307f7d96edd98c015bf38af61c7

That's all there is. I know some people have strong opinions about Heller kits. But for me Heller kits will never go away because they remind me on Xmass when I was a child (I am 35 years old now) and assembled tiny Heller ship kits in scale 1/500 or the like my mother bought me. When I did my Phd at the university I tried to build wooden ship models but with absolutely no avail. I only later found out that building plastic sailing ship model is not a shamble.

Greetings:

I like your idea of using the links from small chains. I have put off building a model of the  Heller Preussen because I couldn't figure out what to use as blocks. Now I've got something I think will work very well.

Thank you

My favorite blocks and deadeyes are the cast Britannia metal ones from Bluejacket ( www.bluejacketinc.com ).  The smallest two or three sizes are about right to represent the largest blocks on a 1/200-scale model.  It might be worth the trouble to order a dozen or two and see how you like them.

For smaller blocks on small-scale models, my favorite technique is the ancient "blob of glue" one - with a small twist.  Tie an oversized knot at the point in the rigging where the block is supposed to go.  Mix a drop of white glue with a drop of acrylic paint in the appropriate color (probably dark brown; the proportions aren't crucial).  Transfer a blob of the glue-paint mixture to the knot, using a toothpick or something similar.  If it's a bit oversized, don't worry; it will shrink a little as it dries.  Keep an eye on it for the next fifteen or twenty minutes.  When the mixture starts getting rubbery, use a toothpick or something similar to tease it into a more block-like shape.  If you're careful, and get a little practice, you can produce mighty convincing blocks this way.  Some of the best modelers in the world do it like this.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Rigging at scale 1/200
Posted by Klomuschel on Thursday, November 12, 2009 4:11 PM

Hi there

When it comes to rigging I am really at the lower receiving end of the food chain. However, I plan to put more effort into rigging my plastic model ships. I have heard a lot of great things about the IMAI ship kits. That said however, I was not particularily impressed by their (IMAI's) rigging plans for the Santa Maria, which I got a good deal on ebay, either. The rigging instructions are a similar joke than the ones of my current project: Airfix it's Endeaveur.

However, this time I am happen to consult the Mondfeld book more often and will build up some kind of understaning of the meaning. I am by no means capable of doing what this fellaw did with the Airfix 1/120 kit (klick on to the 2nd page for the finished ship):

http://www.wettringer-modellbauforum.de/forum/thread.php?threadid=17720

Nevertheless, my big next project will be the "Le Belle Poule" from Heller. For my current Airfix Endeaveur project I do not have any rigging blocks. I try to simulate blocks by tying many knots at the same spot.

I am originally Austrian but happen to live in the UK (Scotland) and found an UK based online dealer who sells 2mm wooden blocks. I am wondering if a 1/200 Le Belle Poule would profit from blocks. Or should I stick with my method to simply imitate rigging blocks by large knots and painting them brown.

In a nutshell: would you use any kind of wooden blocks on a 1/200 scale model ship. If yes what blcoks and if no why not. The obvious answer I guess would be: at 1/200 you would not see any blocks at all. Or do you know of any methods how to imitate blocks for that scale of 1/200.

Thanks for any thoughs and greetings from Edinburgh
