Thinking of a ship.
Posted by jimbot58 on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 3:49 AM

As you can see in my signature below, I am mainly an aircraft modeler, but sometimes like to widen my interests. I would maybe like to do a ship sometime, like perhaps a A/C carrier or a battle ship.  I see the various scales out there with 1/350 and 1/700 being the most common. Just how large would either be in say a carrier? And would the smaller scale offer much detail as opposed to the 1/700th? I like a decent amount of detail but not to the point of being overly complicated. And also as far as manufactures, which is good, better, best kind of thing?

Thanks for any tips you can offer....

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

You first want to decide on a time period and more particular choice of ship type. There are many types of battleships from the tiny Coastal Battleships to the massive Yamato and Iowa classes. Battleships can range in size in 1/700 scale from as little as 2-3 inches to 15 inches. A 1/350 kit would be approximately twice the size. The same goes for carriers. There was the tiny IJN Hosho and USS Langley all the way up to the Saratogas, and the big nukes of today. There are also many sub-types of aircraft carrier as well. There are a lot of ships to choose from in either scale with 700 being the widest selection. You have a choice to make in media as well with metal, plastic and resin kits all being available. WS

I recommend that you go to either to Hobby Lobby or your LHS and start with a small carrier, as they tend to be easier then turreted ships.

While I am all for supporting your LHS the chances of finding a good selection of ship models are slim. The two best on line sources of ship models in the USA are Pacific Front Hobbies and Free Time Hobbies. There are thousands of choices when you consider all the available media. In the UK you would go with White Ensign Models, in Germany NNT. WS

A WWII carrier or battleship will be smaller than a modern carrier.
