Scale question
Posted by samsonguy on Monday, December 21, 2009 12:24 PM

Everyone,

Have been lurking for a while and figured it was time for a post.

I keep all my sailing ship kits proportional to each other by staying in the 1/96 & 1/100 scales.

As such I have all the Revell kits, all the Hellers (even the much loved Soliel Royal), and a few other brands. A couple are in various stages of completion and the rest are stashed away waiting to be assembled in due time, or probably never.

A while ago when I heard about the rerelease of the Charles W Morgan I figured I would jump and add this to my stash. Revell lists this at 1/110 so its well kinda close in scale and since I have a soft spot for this one from my childhood its a no brainer.

When I opened the kit what surprised me  was the small size of the hull sections they are dwarfed by the Constitution or Cutty Sark hull. I read that the whalers were not large ships but then the scale question came into play.  Checking the hull dimensions from Mystic Seaport site it appears that the scale comes out to more like 1/130 to 1/135 and not Revells 1/110.

Im sure a the scale discussion has been posted before just not on this specific kit.  Either Im out in left field on this one or someone pulled the old scale trick again.

Thanks to everyone here I have picked up a lot following this forum and any comments are appreciated.

Good thing I only paid 25 bucks for this one.

Manufacturers have been know to make packaging errors. Someone failed to review the data before going to print.

The info I have indicates Morgan's length as 105.6', Beam 27.7', depth 17.6'. A ship's length can be expressed in many ways, waterline length, length between perpendiculars, length overall. It's then hard to say exactly how long the hull is unless you know the terms of the stated length. In 1/110, her beam (width) should be 3".  In 1/135, her beam would be 2.46".    105.6' in 1/110 is 11.53".

While I can not offer you a true mathematical equation for the difference in sizes between the Morgan and the Constitution, I have actually been aboard both ships and the Constitution is much larger than the Morgan.

It could have been the way the ships were presented. The Constitution was tied up in Boston with a large city as a backdrop while the Morgan is docked next to a quaint fishing village. Smile

It is possible that the Constitution just looked bigger to me.

Constitution is 204' overall,172' at the waterline, and 44' beam, close to 85-90 percent larger than Morgan.
